Our purpose-built satellite unit in Swindon opened in October 2022, housing 2 Varian TrueBeam linacs with 6DoF couches and a GoSim Radiotherapy CT scanner. The satellite is an extension of the radiotherapy service at the Oxford Cancer Centre & networked by Aria. It has its own clinic rooms, planning suite, & MacMillan patient information area. It is located on the Great Western Hospital site which is located close to J15 of the M4.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will:

  • Provide safe and accurate highly specialised radiotherapy planning and treatment to patients with a diagnosis of cancer across the full range of tumour sites.
  • Work on a rotational basis through all clinical areas; treatment floor and the pre-treatment area.
  • Safely and efficiently manipulate all complex, specialised equipment associated with the planning and treatment of patients undergoing treatment with ionising radiation.
  • Provide supervision and participate in the training of trainee Radiographers.
  • Assess the needs of the patient and plan the delivery of care around those needs.

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder must be clinically competent to safely and efficiently manipulate all complex, specialised equipment associated with the planning and treatment of patients undergoing treatment with ionising radiation.
  • Support the team leader in the day-to-day management of their assigned pre-treatment or treatment work area, assisting in the organisation and management of the clinical workload.
  • Work on a rotational basis through all clinical areas; treatment floor and the pre-treatment area.
  • The post holder will be expected to provide safe and accurate highly specialised radiotherapy planning and treatment to patients with a diagnosis of cancer across the full range of tumour sites. They will be part of the team of radiographers providing care for patients, ensuring the provision of a high quality, patient-focussed service. To take individual professional responsibility for the accurate planning and delivery of radiation treatment to radiotherapy patients ensuring that the requirements of the current IR(ME)R and IRR legislation are met.
  • Be responsible and accountable for own actions in the pre-treatment and treatment area in accordance with the Radiographers Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Use professional knowledge and experience to support the safe and efficient operation of the working area.
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced members of staff and students.
  • Ensure that confidentiality and the dignity of patients is recognised and respected at all times.
  • Accurately interpret complex treatment plans and prescriptions.
  • Review and evaluate verification images, recommending action to be taken to improve treatment accuracy.
  • CT scan and simulate patients to localise tumour volumes for treatment planning, including the outlining of critical structures and organs in preparation for the tumour volume delineation by the Clinical Oncologist.
  • Advise clinicians on the suitability and limitations of various treatment options available in the department.
  • Virtual simulation for patients including field placement and contouring of OAR.
  • Collect and collate department statistical data regarding patient activity for the assigned clinical area.
  • Ensure all equipment in their work area is kept clean and dust free, all accessory items to be stored carefully and safely to prevent injury to patients and staff and to prevent damage to equipment.
  • Undertake assessment of patients attending for radiotherapy daily to evaluate their physical, mental, and social welfare to ensure that the patient is fit for treatment, referring to other specialists within the oncology team as appropriate.
  • Consult a more senior radiographer regarding any concerns relating to the accuracy of planning or treatment.
  • Provide support to patients prior to and whilst they are undergoing a course of radiotherapy regarding both acute and chronic side effects, and their management, due to radiotherapy.
  • Problem solve technical problems relating to individual patients' treatments, referring to the Team Leader if the issue is outside own scope of practice.
  • Follow Standard Operational Procedures for the operation of the treatment machines.

Person Specification

Experience

  • System Knowledge of Varian & ARIA.

Qualifications

  • HCPC Registration.
  • University Degree in Radiography or equivalent.
