Job Description
Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform clinical radiographic duties as delegated by the lead radiographer for the modality.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team working.
- Practice within the standards of the Health Professions Council.
- Ensure effective communication with patients, carers and all health care professionals about all aspects of patient care, using sensitivity, tact, empathy and reassurance.
- Remain calm and professional during extremely pressurised situations.
- Maintain accurate documentation pertinent to the examination.
- Assist in training and supervision of radiographer helpers, assistant practitioners and students.
- Maintain close liaison with senior radiographers to organise and supervise workflow in the area.
- Hold competent knowledge of anatomy.
- Be competent in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Assist in safe patient transfer.
- Support flexible working to maximise workload through the Radiology department.
- Plan and prioritise patient lists and workload.
- Act independently within appropriate clinical/professional guidelines and refer to the manager when necessary.
- Ensure previous imaging is available and all images are discharged to the appropriate place post‑examination.
- Confirm all patients are positively identified prior to examination.
- Consistently adhere to local rules and support others to do the same.
- Have a thorough knowledge of X‑ray imaging and safety.
- Use patient monitoring systems and know how to deal with emergency situations.
- Authorise x‑ray referrals in line with justified protocols.
- Perform quality assurance (QA) tests on equipment as required.
Managerial / Leadership Responsibilities
- Disseminate information from training sessions as required.
- Participate in the staff development programme and educational activities.
- Participate in the departmental appraisal system.
- Support the completion of actions identified by data quality reports and audits.
- Ensure equipment QA is performed according to protocol.
- Manage referrals through the CRIS system.
Organisational Responsibilities
- Ensure professional and honest time management of shifts.
- Monitor own roster and know upcoming shifts.
- Arrange cover for shifts which cannot be completed.
- Ensure that time/owing is taken on a shift for the modality of which it was accrued.
- Manage annual leave planning.
Professional Responsibilities
- Actively participate in in‑service training programmes within the department.
- Attend relevant training courses identified and agreed with the line manager during personal development review.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date CPD portfolio.
- Ensure radiation doses to every patient are as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) consistent with a diagnostic result.
- Work to radiographic protocols and policies as required under ionising regulations.
- Record unintended or accidental doses through the LHCH incident reporting mechanism.
- Escalate potential risks to senior radiographers immediately.
- Ensure personal radiation protection safety, including PPE and dosimetry monitoring.
Quality Responsibilities
- Comply with the Trust’s health and safety policies, including mandatory training attendance.
- Comply with departmental and organisational policies and procedures, reporting all accidents and incidents.
- Monitor equipment condition and advise of defects to provide early warning for potential hazards.
- Participate in clinical audits as appropriate.
- Observe patient confidentiality at all times and comply with the data protection act and Caldicott recommendations.

Essential Qualifications
- BSc (Hons) degree; FHEQ level 6/SCQF level 10
- BSc (Hons) degree apprenticeship; FHEQ level 6/SCQF level 10
- MSc (pre‑registration); FHEQ level 7/SCQF level 11
Essential Knowledge & Experience
- Understanding of the biological effects of radiations for use in clinical decision‑making.
- Knowledge of exposure factors, diagnostic reference levels and dose reference levels, and their impact on image quality and effective dose.
- Human anatomy, pathology, physiology and the biological effects of radiations for clinical decision‑making.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience of cardiac pacing.
- Experience of developing evidence‑based practice.
