Job description

Job Description

The team is responsible for the design and validation of radiation shielding for the UK's nuclear powered submarine fleet. Engaged across three different submarine programmes in different stages of the engineering lifecycle designing new shields, providing design change assessment into the build programme, and conducting radiation metrology on-board during commissioning. Alongside the primary work you will conduct radiological safety studies for several other areas, design novel radiation detectors and are developing capability in the field of radiation damage to electronics.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Conducting radiological safety assessments
  2. Assessing radiation damage risk to electronics
  3. Developing and deploying radiation detection systems
  4. Completing the systems engineering design of the secondary shielding system
  5. Running and analysing point kernel and monte-carlo calculations
  6. Providing technical advice on impact of changes and defects across the whole boat
  7. Developing ALARP justifications in support of design decisions

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  1. Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Nuclear Science, or a related field
  2. Demonstrable knowledge/experience of radiation physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear safety or similar
  3. Knowledge/experience of Radiological safety assessments, ALARP justifications or similar
  4. Knowledge/experience of radiation transport methods (ATTILLA/MCBEND/MCNP etc.)

Desirable:

  1. Experience of submarine enterprise
  2. Change Management experience
  3. Good technical written and verbal communication
