About the Company

EmpowerRD, a London-based FinTech innovator, was founded in 2017 with a clear mission: to simplify and strengthen R&D tax relief claims for UK businesses. Recognised in Entrepreneur UK's prestigious "London 100" as a modern leader in R&D tax credits, we achieve this through a combination of our proprietary platform and expert advisory support.

  • We have successfully supported over 1,200 UK businesses, securing £260 million in claims to date.
  • Our commitment to compliance is reflected in our low HMRC enquiry rate, with historically less than 5 % of our claims facing scrutiny.

As a technology-led consultancy, our primary focus is on empowering UK software and tech companies to access crucial non-dilutive funding. To support our growth, we are currently recruiting a specialist who can translate software innovations into HMRC-compliant technical narratives, a vital role in scaling our operations.

About the Role

As a R&D Tax Technical Writer, you will transform complex technical insights from client software projects into clear HMRC-aligned narratives that meet the DSIT guidelines. Your work will directly enable tech companies to claim R&D relief confidently and accurately.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Narrative Development: Produce high-quality, HMRC-compliant narratives.
  • Client Technical Interviews: Be able to conduct in-depth interviews with software engineers, architects, developers, and tech leads to extract relevant technical information.
  • Editing & Documentation Review: Maintain high standards for clarity, grammar, technical depth, and consistency across all documentation.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Remain up-to-date with HMRC's evolving R&D guidance, legislative updates, and emerging technologies in software, cloud, AI/ML, and cybersecurity.
Requirements
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or similar or proven experience in technical writing within software/IT domains.
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, code review, test automation, CI/CD, API development, microservices, cloud/native architectures, and emerging domains like AI/ML, cybersecurity, or data engineering.
  • Experience in technical documentation or writing, especially for grant applications, R&D claims, or regulatory purposes.
  • Excellent written communication skills with attention to detail and ability to simplify technical complexity for non-technical audiences.
  • Organisational skill for managing multiple client engagements and deadlines.
  • Strong client-facing and interpersonal skills for engaging with technical stakeholders.
Preferred Attributes
  • Prior experience producing HMRC R&D claim narratives for software or IT clients.
  • Familiarity with HMRC's DSIT Guidelines.
  • Background in professional services or consultancies delivering technical and financial compliance.
What We Offer
  • Join a fast-growing, tech-first R&D consultancy that's transforming how UK software businesses access funding.
  • Work closely with innovative clients across sectors like cloud, AI/ML, cybersecurity, and platform engineering.
  • A supportive environment with professional development and training opportunities.
  • Competitive salary, benefits, and remote-friendly working options.
