This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a tax, accounting, or R&D financials background, or technical/engineering background, to work within BDO’s Innovation & Technology Group based in Manchester.

The firm's specialist Innovation & Technology Group includes engineers, programmers, scientists, and finance professionals such as auditors and tax accountants, all experienced in claiming R&D tax relief. Services include:

• Claiming R&D tax relief
• Grants
• International R&D relief

The successful candidate will work as part of the wider Tax team, providing bespoke taxation services to clients, from compliance to high-level advisory work, including tax returns, computations, planning, and HMRC dealings.

The role and key responsibilities

This client-facing role involves working with clients across sectors. Key aspects include building rapport, managing projects, and reviewing financial claims for quality and ethics. Over time, reviewing technical R&D claim elements is expected. Responsibilities include:

• Financial assessment and disclosure preparation for HMRC
• Submission of R&D claims and pre-notifications
• Ensuring claims meet tax legislation and guidelines
• Liaising with technical tax staff for claim submissions
• Supporting R&D relief claims during HMRC inquiries
• Updating technical knowledge

You will work closely with clients’ financial and technical teams and have extensive client communication. Opportunities to support business development and cross-sector R&D are also available.
