We are currently seeking to recruit a Research & Development Manufacturing Manager. This position is at the Electronic Controls and Motor Systems (ECMS) site within Collins Aerospace, Solihull, UK with a focus on R&D electric motors and controllers. The role requires on-site working for at least 4 days per week.


The role holder will manage a team of Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians across mechanical and electronic build and test of products. The role holder will work with the Engineering department and Supply Chain team to ensure quality products are available to meet technology deadlines and customer expectations.


The R&D Manufacturing Manager will have experience of identifying key processes to bring in-house and the ability to bring new capability to the site such as motor winding processes. The R&D Manufacturing Manager is responsible for the design and implementation of the safe, effective layout of the module and the necessary standard processes to ensure the efficient flow of manufacturing activities.


What You Will Do:
  • Functional management of the Manufacturing team and apprentices including appraisals, 1-2-1 reviews, development plans and resource allocation across projects.
  • Ensure the Manufacturing team follows the corporate and local processes.
  • Represent the function at corporate and BSI audits to maintain the AS9100 standard. Ensure the manufacturing area has traceable components, calibrated tools and compliant chemicals at all times.
  • Ensure the digital build documentation is always in line with the physical build.
  • Support the Manufacturing Engineers by raising, maintaining and closing works orders through SAP and link to Solumina.
  • Act as the key point of contact for all manufacturing deliverables.
  • Ensure effective communication with internal and external customers to fully understand and respond to their requirements.
  • Ensure manufacturing capacity and capability are planned, monitored and communicated to relevant parties.
  • Develop, communicate, implement, and maintain KPIs for the Operations area. Work with the Supply Chain Manager to contribute to the "make vs buy" process.
  • Work with the Engineering team, to enable the successful transition of products from the design stage to the manufacturing stage and testing.
  • Ensure manufacture of parts and products in line with design data.
  • Proactively seek out improvement opportunities and lead a culture of continuous improvement within the manufacturing team.
  • Lead and develop the manufacturing team, ensuring professional standards are maintained and team members are encouraged to pursue relevant qualifications and training. This includes the maintenance of skills matrices.
  • Ensure the effective implementation of ECMS and Collins Aerospace policies and procedures, including those relating to health, safety and wellbeing, and business ethics.
Qualifications / Experience You Must Have:
  • A good people manager who supports and develops the Manufacturing team. Someone who has a positive attitude, excellent attention to detail and shows flexibility to ensure customer deadlines are met.
  • Manufacturing Engineering degree or equivalent SAP experience.
  • Demonstrates professional and credible communication with colleagues, leaders and customers.
  • Uses analytical and numeracy skills to produce concise reports and effective presentations.
  • Proficient in the use of IT and able to leverage systems to provide data and reports for the benefit of the business.
  • Proactive with strong organisational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications / Experience We Prefer:
  • AS9100 experience.
  • AS9145 experience.
  • Understanding of electric motor topology.
  • Keen interest in new technologies and improved ways of working.
  • Previous management experience in the Aerospace industry or a similar high precision environment.
