Job summary

Skilled Careers is seeking an experienced Project Surveyor for a permanent, site-based role on a commercial refurbishment project in Harlow. You will manage the day-to-day commercial activities, control costs and report to the Managing Surveyor.

The successful candidate will have a background in main contracting, with experience in subcontract package procurement, cost control and commercial reporting, and a proactive, site-based approach to delivering value.

Project Surveyor – Main Contractor

Location: Harlow, Essex
Salary: Up to £75,000 + package, depending on experience
Position: Permanent, Site-Based

The Opportunity

An established main contractor is looking to recruit an experienced Project Surveyor to join its team on a commercial refurbishment project in Harlow.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded Surveyor to take a key role in the financial management and delivery of a refurbishment scheme, working closely with the site team and reporting directly to the Managing Surveyor.

The successful candidate will have a strong main contracting background, with experience managing subcontractor packages, cost control and commercial reporting. This role would suit someone looking to take ownership of their commercial responsibilities within a supportive project team.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day commercial aspects of the project, ensuring costs are controlled and financial targets are achieved.
• Procure, negotiate and manage subcontractor packages from initial enquiry through to final account.
• Prepare and administer subcontract orders, payments and variations.
• Undertake cost reporting, forecasting and financial analysis.
• Monitor project expenditure, identify commercial risks and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
• Manage valuations, applications for payment and final accounts.
• Assess variations and manage change control in accordance with contractual requirements.
• Work closely with the Project Manager, site team and Managing Surveyor to support the successful delivery of the project.
• Maintain accurate commercial records and provide regular financial updates.
• Ensure commercial procedures are followed and project budgets are effectively managed throughout the construction process.

The Ideal Candidate

• Previous experience as a Project Surveyor or Quantity Surveyor with a main contractor.
• Strong experience in subcontract procurement, commercial management and cost control.
• Experience managing subcontractor accounts, variations and final accounts.
• A good understanding of construction contracts and commercial processes.
• Previous experience working on commercial refurbishment projects would be advantageous.
• Strong negotiation, communication and organisational skills.
• A proactive and commercially focused approach, with the ability to work effectively within a site-based team.
