Job summary
Barhale in Peterborough is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to support commercial delivery on major infrastructure projects. You will maintain cost data, quality reporting and interface with clients and subcontractors to maximise value.
The role requires a HND/degree in Quantity Surveying, knowledge of ICE/NEC contract forms, and strong numeracy and communication skills. A proactive team player who can work to tight deadlines is essential.
Qualifications
- Experience in the construction industry is essential.
- HND or degree in Quantity Surveying is required.
- Familiar with ICE/NEC forms and contract knowledge.
- Experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors.
- Strong ability to produce monthly cost reporting and earned value analysis.
- Good numeracy, communication and computer literacy.

Reporting to: Senior Quantity Surveyor/Managing Quantity Surveyor
The Quantity Surveyor provides commercial support to project teams, maintaining accurate commercial information and ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and the Company’s objectives. The role involves regular liaison with clients, client representatives and third parties on commercial matters, while actively identifying and realising commercial opportunities and mitigating business risk.
To support the successful commercial delivery of projects through effective cost control, reporting, subcontract management and contractual compliance. The role ensures accurate forecasting, cash management and value recovery while contributing to the continuous improvement of commercial processes and practices.
- Ensure internal commercial processes are adhered to across the business unit
- Actively seek to improve commercial processes and procedures
- Maintain an understanding of JV / Alliance commercial processes where applicable and support their development
- Support compliance with contractual and commercial governance requirements
- Ensure robust, accurate and timely cost and value reporting at the project and business unit level
- Produce accurate cash flow reporting
- Carry out cost management and forecasting activities
- Update monthly CVRs, cost plans and commercial plans
- Demonstrate strong earned value and cost analysis capability
- Ensure main contract terms and conditions are appropriate, with commercial risks identified
- Manage subcontract letting, negotiation and financial accounting
- Ensure supply chain engagement under correct contractual terms
- Prepare applications for payment
- Liaise with clients and third parties on variations, claims and additional payments
- Contribute to effective collaboration between commercial and operational site teams
- Share best practice and proactively advise site teams on cost management
- Work both independently and collaboratively within the commercial team
- Develop commercial acumen and technical capability
- Build and maintain effective client relationships
- Work closely with site management to forecast expenditure and cash recovery
- Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers and third parties on commercial matters

- Previous experience in the construction industry
- HND/degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying
- Familiarity with ICE/NEC forms of contract and knowledge and understanding of Construction Law
- Previous experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors, including chairing regular meetings, measurement and control cycle, certificates, and accruals calculations.
- Ability to demonstrate a good knowledge of monthly reporting and earned value analysis.
- Have knowledge and experience in estimation and cost analysis.
- Excellent communication, numeric and computer literacy skills, proficient in Microsoft Office
- Organisation and time management skills, with the ability to work to tight deadlines
- Ability to work effectively in a team and delegate, but also able to work on own initiative
- Member of RICS or other relevant professional body, or working towards CSCS card
