Job description

Join us as a Quantity Surveying apprentice and from day one you will be working with an experienced team and will be able to make an instant contribution to running a multi‑million‑pound project. Looking after the technical, organising, and supervising side of construction projects, quantity surveyors are the construction professionals who make up our commercial management team. As a quantity surveying apprentice, you will work predominantly on site, supporting the delivery of projects and learning from experienced professionals.

Day‑to‑Day Activities
  • Technical Development – Gain hands‑on experience and put your learning into practice.
  • Problem Solving – Learn how to overcome challenges on live projects and drive quality through effective planning and first‑time delivery.
  • On‑Site Experience – Be part of real construction projects and work closely with our skilled workforce to apply your learning and knowledge in real‑world scenarios.
  • Manage contracts, monitor costs, and record changes in cost and materials with senior quantity surveyors and the site team.
  • Safety and Sustainability – Help to ensure work is carried out safely in line with the company's health and safety standards, maintain high personal standards, support environmental awareness, and monitor delivery against the agreed programme.
  • Construction Technology – Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects.
  • Contracts – Apply different types of contracts to different situations.
  • Procurement – Assist in the selection and negotiation with specialist contractors.
  • Cost Control – Assist in measurement and costing of construction works.
  • Financial Reporting – Assist in the preparation of financial reports, cash flow, and cost forecasts.
  • Administration – Assist in the collection, collation, and storage of relevant data and its analysis.
Apprenticeship Program

Our 5‑year technical apprenticeship starts at Level 4, where you will work towards a Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4) in Quantity Surveying and an HNC. You will also work towards a professional qualification with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). The programme includes a university‑style experience while getting paid, with 9 weeks in Leeds each year (hotel accommodation and travel paid).

Qualifications and Requirements
  • GCSEs: 5 × GCSEs (grade 9 – 4 (A‑C)).
  • English Language (grade 4 (C) or above).
  • Mathematics (grade 5 (B) or above).
  • Associate Level in STEM, A‑Levels/BTEC or T Level in Construction (pass).
  • Other relevant qualifications and industry experience may be considered.
  • Communication skills, IT skills, attention to detail, organisational skills, problem‑solving skills, administrative skills, number skills, analytical skills, logical thinking, team working, initiative.
  • Willingness to travel as required and a full UK driving licence.
Benefits and Development

After completing the Level 4 apprenticeship you will receive a promotion and the opportunity to progress to our 3‑year Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship, gain a full honours degree, and work towards chartered membership of the CIOB.

After completing the full 5‑year programme with BAM, most apprentices have their full degree, relevant professional membership, and earn in excess of £30,000 + a company car or allowance.
