Job description

Ready to take your career stratospheric?

AALTO is a global leader in the stratosphere. We design, manufacture and offer Earth observation and connectivity services using our record-breaking Zephyr High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) solar-electric unmanned aircraft, capable of staying in the stratosphere for days, weeks, and months at a time.

Powered entirely by the sun, Zephyr operates above 60,000 feet, high above conventional air traffic. As a new layer in Earth observation and connectivity ecosystems, Zephyr is positioned between satellites and more conventional terrestrial assets – filling in the operational gap between the two layers, while remaining a complementary solution capable of working in a system of systems.

Services delivered with Zephyr can empower government and commercial customers with capabilities to see and sense or connect from the stratosphere – making a meaningful impact on the ground, from the skies.

Join #TeamAALTO as we create this new, up-and-coming frontier, and be a part of a highly skilled, innovative and passionate group of people working together to make sure “the future is stratospheric.”

Job Purpose:

We are seeking a Quality Engineer with strong aviation and aerospace experience to support the development, testing, and certification of our HAPS platform. This role is central to ensuring product quality, airworthiness, and compliance across design, build, and operational phases. You will help drive robust quality processes in line with regulatory requirements, internal standards, and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with AS9100, CAA/EASA Part 21/145, and other applicable aviation regulations.
  • Support airworthiness and certification processes, including documentation and audit readiness.
  • Lead quality planning and the development of inspection strategies, including First Article Inspections (FAI) in line with AS9102.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement effective Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) for quality issues.
  • Manage non-conformance reporting (NCR) and participate in Material Review Boards (MRBs).
  • Perform audits (internal, supplier, and regulatory), and ensure timely closure of findings.
  • Work closely with design, manufacturing, and systems engineering to ensure quality is integrated from concept through production.
  • Analyse data, generate reports, and identify trends to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support supplier quality assurance for aerospace-grade components and assemblies.

Requirements:

  • A proven track record in Quality Engineering within the aerospace or aviation sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of AS9100, CAA/EASA regulatory frameworks, and quality management systems.
  • Strong proficiency in root cause analysis tools, such as 8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa, or FMEA.
  • Familiarity with quality data tools and inspection equipment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in high-altitude, unmanned, or stratospheric platforms.
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt or ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).
  • Familiarity with digital quality and PLM systems (e.g., Teamcenter, SAP-QM, Minitab).
  • Knowledge of aerospace software/hardware certification standards (e.g., DO-178, DO-254).
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced R&D or innovation-driven aerospace environment.
  • Experience working with complex aerospace systems (UAVs, HAPS, aircraft, or satellites).

At AALTO, we take pride in building and offering an exceptional work environment that values your well-being and rewards your dedication. We believe in recognising your hard work and commitment, which is why we provide a fantastic bonus scheme that rewards your contributions.
