A bit about Butternut

At Butternut, we put the food back into dog food. We believe dogs deserve to eat the healthiest, most natural and tastiest food with none of the nasties. That’s why we make freshly prepared dog food, cooked like you would at home, delivered in perfect portions.

Our goal is to help dogs live healthier, happier, and longer lives, leaving humans smiling after every interaction. Since our founders Kev & Dave hand-delivered the first Butternut Box, we now feed many dogs across the UK. We want to expand globally, and to do so, we need a team of brilliant people who share our ambition.

A bit about the role

As a Quality Technician, reporting to the Technical Manager at Rudie's Kitchen, you will ensure that our quality systems and processes are operated effectively, maintaining product quality from raw materials to dispatched goods.

This role is between a typical Quality role and that of a Senior QA, offering a senior-level scope without line management responsibilities, with an attractive salary of £40,678.72 per year.

Your responsibilities include:
  1. Educating the broader team to proactively manage process and system controls.
  2. Conducting product testing on raw materials and finished goods.
  3. Monitoring and trending product quality, identifying improvements, and collaborating with other functions.
  4. Completing scheduled QA tasks (GMP, calibrations, audits, sampling) on time and following up on actions.
  5. Investigating non-conformance issues and implementing corrective actions.
  6. Attending process trials.
  7. Ensuring new product processes and equipment are integrated smoothly and supported by the Quality Management System.
  8. This is a full-time, permanent role with a shift rotation including days, nights, and some weekends, averaging 41 hours per week. Shifts include 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am, with patterns such as 4 on/4 off or 5 on/5 off.
Ideal candidate profile:
  • Previous QA Lead experience is essential.
  • Pragmatic, adaptable, resilient, and humble.
  • Proven experience in QA, systems management, or HACCP within food manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of production and packing processes.
  • Knowledge of process capability and target setting.
  • Enthusiastic about building from the ground up and thriving in fast-paced FMCG environments.
  • Dog lover (naturally!).
What’s in it for you?
  • 33 days of holiday per year, plus additional days based on service.
  • 39 hours of pre-booked wellbeing days (“Paws Days”).
  • £500 annual learning and development budget.
  • Enhanced parental leave.
  • Discounted private medical insurance, gym memberships, and employee discounts on Butternut Box products.
  • Free parking and electric vehicle charging.
  • Team socials and events.
  • Work alongside adorable office dogs like Cleo, Paxo, Cali, and others.
Additional notes:
  • This role is based in Blyth, south of Doncaster.
  • Application responses may take up to 2 weeks due to volume.
  • We are committed to social and environmental responsibility and building an inclusive team.
  • Feel free to apply in your native language; we’re happy to translate.
  • We do not work with external recruitment agencies.

We look forward to your application!
