Job description

Aurora Cedars School in Wolverhampton offers a bespoke education provision for up to 80 pupils aged 5-19 with ASC/SEMH needs, including support for speech and language communication. We are seeking an enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join our therapy team.

Main duties of the job

We aim for excellence in supporting our students. We seek a therapist who shares our vision to empower vulnerable young people to be happy and independent. You will collaborate with staff to deliver assessment and intervention plans, manage a caseload, and contribute to staff training and reflective practice.

Job responsibilities

Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist

Reporting to: Clinical Psychologist and Headteacher

Main Purpose: To develop and deliver a comprehensive Speech and Language Therapy service, including assessments, interventions, and support for students, within an ethical framework.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assess students' speech, language, and social communication skills
  • Prepare assessment and progress reports for EHCP reviews
  • Develop and review communication programs
  • Deliver therapy interventions in various formats
  • Create visual supports like Social Stories and timetables
  • Offer advice and support to staff, families, and other professionals
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to support individual communication needs
  • Promote a Total Communication approach
  • Develop and deliver staff training on communication
  • Supervise therapy assistants and support staff as appropriate

Additional duties include: managing caseload, maintaining records, conducting assessments, developing communication plans, attending reviews, liaising with agencies, and using specialist software.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge of therapy interventions, behaviour support, trauma impact, Autism Spectrum Conditions
  • Understanding of safeguarding, assessments, behaviour management, and communication strategies for SEMH
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and IT skills
  • Makaton or Signalong experience and ability to produce accessible resources
Experience
  • Postgraduate experience as a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist with NQP competencies
  • Experience with children with learning disabilities, Autism, PMLD, and challenging behaviour
Requirements
  • Registered with RCSLT and HCPC
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
