Job description
Overview

We are currently recruiting two full time Nursing Associates to join the Early Days in Custody team at HMP Elmley.

Within this role you will contribute to the health and wellbeing of patients and service users across all health and care settings. As a Nursing Associate you will deliver high quality, personalised, safe, compassionate care in the best interest of people. You will be equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours required across the fields of nursing, providing holistic care and support for patients.

You will work independently under the leadership of registered nurses, within the sphere of nursing. You will recognise and work within the limits of your competence. You will work to a nationally recognised code of conduct and be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • To work as directed by a registered nurse.
  • To provide physical care to patients in accordance with their care plan.
  • To support the delivery of national screening programmes.
  • To support and deliver clinics as instructed within the establishment’s clinic timetable.
  • Supporting the holistic care needs of all prisoners in the first seven days of custody.
  • Working within the national guidelines – physical health of people in prison NICE guideline reference NG57.
  • Be up to date with emergency response procedures.
  • Carry a radio and respond to medical emergencies as part of the primary care team.
  • Participate and contribute to risk assessments and ACCT reviews.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Promoting Health and Preventing Ill Health

  • Support people to improve and maintain their mental, physical, behavioural health and wellbeing.
  • Actively prevent and protect against disease and ill health.
  • Engage in public health, community development, and the reduction of health inequalities.
  • Implement the principles of recovery, encouraging healthy lifestyles and facilitating psychosocial activities relevant to the patient’s interests. Where appropriate, contribute to psychological interventions under the guidance of a registered professional.
  • Advocate for patients’ needs and rights within Trust policy.
  • Encourage and empower individuals to manage their own care plans.

Important Information

  • All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting to work in a Prison Setting. This will be completed as part of pre-employment checks.
  • Proof of right to work documentation is required.
  • Proof of ID (including 1 photographic ID) and proof of address are required.
  • Non-UK passport holders require correct right to work documentation and a Home Office Share code.
  • Address history for 5 years is required. If less than 5 years UK address history is provided, a Police Certificate in English is required from prior residences.
  • UK passport holders who have lived abroad for more than six months in the last three years must provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from countries visited.
  • Guidance on obtaining a Police Certificate is available via gov.uk; contact embassies/high commissions if needed.
