ROLE: Pupil Welfare Officer

PAY: £15 per hour

WORKING HOURS: 7.30am – 3:30pm, Monday – Friday

START: September 2024

CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent

LOCATION: Borough of Richmond

Situated in an exceptionally beautiful position on the River Thames, our Richmond School is an excellent, co-educational school for pupils aged 4 – 11.

As a school, we aim to equip our pupils with knowledge, life skills and a strong, resilient and adaptable mindset. We believe that excellent education is reflected in outstanding academic pupil outcomes as well as the strong and purposeful personal development of each pupil.

We are seeking to appoint a Pupil Welfare Officer who will provide first aid and care to all pupils throughout the school day. If required, the school can provide the necessary training for the role.

The role includes supervising pupils on the morning bus from 7:30am. The role is term time only.

For the right candidate, we can be flexible with contract type and hours of work.

Roles and Responsibilities

Administrative

  1. Contribute to the development and revision of relevant policies e.g. First Aid policy, Well-being to pupils and Medical Conditions policy
  2. Promote appropriate health guidance, wellbeing advice and other supportive strategies to pupils as necessary
  3. Maintain pupil records accurately, confidentially, and safely
  4. To record the dispensing of medication given in school and ensure staff record any medication given on off-site visits
  5. Prepare and manage Individual Health Plans for pupils with a medical condition. E.g. diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, anaphylaxis, to enable pupils to participate fully in school life
  6. Create and organise medical information/advice to be sent out to parents via the School Secretary
  7. To arrange the purchase of medical supplies, checking and recording the amount, prices and condition of all medical supplies and deliveries
  8. To attend relevant staff meetings

Practical

  1. To provide a caring first aid service for the pupils and members of staff
  2. To maintain the highest possible standards of care and to preserve the dignity and confidence of each child
  3. To plan and evaluate the care of pupils until a parent or Senior medical practitioner assumes responsibility for the child’s care
  4. Manage pupils with a medical condition and implement the plan agreed with parents in the individual health plan, sharing necessary information with staff
  5. Contact parents/carers for updates of current medical treatment/progress
  6. To lead first aid and emergency care and treatment, as necessary. This includes overseeing the maintenance and stock of all school first aid kits
  7. To provide health advice and support to pupils

Health and Safety

  1. To be aware of Health and Safety issues within the school relating to first aid and care
  2. To attend health and safety meetings
  3. To carry out risk assessments where necessary with the Deputy Headteacher
  4. Ensure correct storage, administration, and disposal of medicines to pupils and staff
  5. Keep records of all accidents and provide reports for the Health and Safety committee and Headteacher board report, when requested

Pastoral

  1. Provide a listening ear for any pupils who wish to speak about an issue
  2. To act in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policy and maintain a good working relationship with the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead
  3. To support the Designated Safeguarding Lead and team by liaising closely about issues affecting individuals and the wider school community

Communication

  1. Actively participate in the promotion of good communication throughout the school
  2. Liaise effectively with the Deputy Headteacher to ensure an effective two-way communication regarding observations with pupils and within the school community

Health Education

  1. To participate in the promotion of health education and wellbeing within the School

Training

  1. With the support of the Deputy Headteacher, arrange training for all staff on common medical conditions and how to administer emergency medications such as an asthma inhaler and Epipen

Other Duties

  1. To attend school events throughout the school year, as required
  2. To adhere to school policies and procedures
  3. To contribute to the provision of positive relationships with staff, pupils, parents, and outside agencies
  4. To attend training and participate in professional development as well as the school appraisal system, as required
  5. To be aware of and respect the confidential nature of issues
