Hackney Council is seeking a dedicated Public Space Surveillance professional to support the PSS Manager with high-quality, reliable back-office and technical duties across CCTV operations. The role includes monitoring contractor work, updating software, and contributing to camera installation projects.
You will be involved in developing training materials, coordinating with radio contractors, and ensuring ANPR data shared with police is accurate.

This role is based within our Public Space Surveillance (PSS) Team, responding to incidents such as terrorist attacks, floods, fires, or anything that disrupts the people or infrastructure of Hackney;
The PSS Team provides the Borough with: – Public Space Surveillance – centralised capability, with experience, expertise, and knowledge of the operation of CCTV systems.
The team provides management and legislative expertise for other council CCTV users and external partners and an Automatic Number Plate Recognition system to provide alarms to the Public Space Surveillance Operators and the Police. Engineering works: a network of 150 km of underground ducts containing optical fibre cable on which the council’s CCTV and ICT systems run and a radio service for all council services.
The services work continuously, 24 hours a day, all year.
You will be responsible for providing a central key resource to the PSS Manager, ensuring that they receive high-quality, reliable, flexible and proactive support.
Duties will involve Public Space Surveillance; inspecting work carried out by contractors, checking that requests from our Contractors for extra materials and time are justified and ensuring they are paid appropriately, updating software on computers and ensuring they function correctly.
You will devise training instructions and produce documents for our Public Space Surveillance Operators to learn from as 'distance learning modules', installing small projects such as one to three Town Centre cameras in a public space, assisting the PSS Manager in larger installation projects, devising engineering solutions for surveillance needs, such as relocatable cameras, measuring work carried out on Highways, to ensure the meterage claimed for by contractors is correct.
Assisting the Service Manager in liaising with radio contractors to ensure the Council’s radio systems function correctly and our records are kept up to date, whilst ensuring Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras are functioning and the data we send to the Police is accurate and complete.
You must have knowledge of, or enthusiasm for, CCTV or other allied technical matters. Training will be provided to the successful applicant to fill in the gaps in their knowledge. A formal qualification is not relevant; however you may have a keen interest in technical matters, perhaps building your own PCs, or radio controlled vehicles.
Above all else, you will be enthusiastic, a good team player, hard-working, with a track record of being a good communicator to people at all levels. You will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills and proven organisational experience, combined with skills in computing applications, ideally able to use G Suite applications such as Gmail, G-Sheets, etc.
