Job summary

Apolitical is building a global data-driven platform to support governments and public servants. We are hiring a data engineer to own ingestion, orchestration and data governance across sources like Contentful, HubSpot, and Notion, using Airflow, Airbyte, and Python pipelines.

You will operate cloud infrastructure (Terraform, BigQuery) and contribute to semantic data layers for product and partnerships, while ensuring privacy, security, and scalable data practices across the organization.

Qualifications

• Experience building production data infrastructure on a cloud data warehouse.
• End-to-end ownership of data pipelines, not just analytics.
• Strong SQL and data modelling, including dimensional modelling and production dbt with tests.
• Apply data protection practices, UK GDPR, and address residency requirements in practice.
• Ability to explain design choices and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Share knowledge and review others' work to avoid single-point dependency.

Responsibilities

• Own ingestion and integration - bring data into BigQuery from multiple sources using Airflow, Airbyte and Python pipelines.
• Run the data platform - operate orchestration, Terraform-managed infra, container workloads and BigQuery administration.
• Write data back safely - own reverse-ETL pipelines to HubSpot, Postgres, Pinecone with safeguards.
• Govern sensitive data - apply RBAC, policy tags, PII conventions, retention and lineage per UK GDPR.
• Model data for self-serve and AI - extend dbt project and design semantic layers for queries.
• Raise quality and engineering standards - improve CI/CD, document decisions, and mentor teammates.
