Major Responsibilities:
- Provide security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion, even in challenging circumstances, following policies, procedures, and training. Maintain a professional, approachable, and service-oriented appearance and demeanor to inspire confidence in patients, visitors, and team members. Stay alert, observant, and ethical. Enforce all safety and security rules and regulations. Keep department uniform and equipment in good repair.
- Conduct routine interior and exterior patrols to ensure safety and security, including inspections for vulnerabilities, hazards, fire conditions, audits of Interim Life Safety Measures, management of patient valuables, and contraband searches. Assist team members, patients, and visitors by providing information, directions, and physical assistance. Control traffic, monitor visitor conduct, and question unauthorized persons.
- Prevent, respond to, and investigate workplace violence. Handle service calls involving combative or threatening individuals and serve as a primary resource for de-escalation.
- Plan, prevent, practice, and respond to emergencies such as infant/child abductions, fires, and active threats. Respond immediately to emergencies; intervene physically as trained to prevent injury.
- Investigate incidents on Advocate Aurora property, complete accurate reports promptly, address and escalate complaints appropriately, and provide supporting documentation.
- Perform liaison rounding to build partnerships with departments and units. Deliver security awareness education to staff to enhance overall site security.
- Coordinate with law enforcement and first responders. Monitor law enforcement prisoner transports to ensure policy compliance and safety.
- Potentially serve as a preceptor for new officers, providing feedback and helping maintain competencies.
- Maintain current training standards in radio communication, verbal de-escalation, CPR, restraints, and related areas.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Security Officer healthcare certification (CHSO) from IAHSS, to be obtained within 2 years.
- Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license from the Department of Justice (DOJ), required for carrying a taser at work.
- Valid driver's license issued by the DMV.
Education Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience Required:
- Typically 1 year of experience in security, public safety, or customer service, responding to emergencies and resolving issues that pose risks to people or property.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to exercise mature judgment and sound reasoning while maintaining a courteous demeanor, even with verbally aggressive individuals.
- Experience in quickly assessing dangerous situations and taking appropriate action.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer use for documentation (Microsoft Word, Excel, web navigation, database entry).
- Flexibility to work off-shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Ability to meet current training standards in radio communication, de-escalation, CPR, restraints, etc.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, drive, and lift up to 35 lbs occasionally. Capable of pushing/pulling with 35 lbs of force.
- Work environment temperature may vary between -10 to 90 degrees outdoors.
- Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation hazards; protective clothing required as necessary.
- Operate all necessary equipment.
- Ability to defend oneself or others in physical confrontations.
