Job summary

Orkney Islands Council in Kirkwall is seeking a Public Lighting Operative to maintain and install street lighting and related infrastructure at Hatston Depot. The role is full-time, permanent, 37 hours per week, with a salary of £32,976–£33,652 and the option of a flexible working pattern where possible.

You will work Monday to Thursday 8am–4pm and Friday 8am–3:30pm, with standby out-of-hours rota. A Level 1 Disclosure check is required; applications close 1 November 2026.

The above amounts include Distant Islands Allowance.

You will be reporting to Darren Bisby, Team Manager Roads and Grounds Operations.

Your working pattern is Monday to Thursday 8am to 4pm and Friday 8am to 3.30pm. We are happy to talk flexible working, where possible.

The purpose of this role is to undertake as part of a team, the maintenance of public lighting installations and associated infrastructure.

We are looking to appoint a full time Public Lighting Operative to to undertake as part of a team the installation and maintenance of street lighting columns, control gear and other street furniture. This will include the setting out of work in relation to the construction of public lighting installations.
