Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Public Health team at Westmorland & Furness Council. This is a full-time post, working with partners in a Council committed to placing people at the centre of everything we do and enabling our residents to lead healthy,happy lives.

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for this newly created role, which offers a unique opportunity to contribute to key areas of work informed by the Council Plan and Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

In addition to supporting the Council’s statutory public health duties, you will help develop and commission significant strategic programmes and services, while working with local communities and partners to create positive change.

Who we are looking for…

You will play a vital role in supporting the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of public health projects across a range of priority themes, initially including (but not limited to):

  • Sexual and reproductive health
  • Women’s health
  • Healthy ageing
  • Mental health
  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention
  • Locality public health approaches

You will work collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, and communities to contribute to evidence-informed programmes and interventions that improve population health and reduce health inequalities.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive individual with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. You should be passionate about improving health and wellbeing, confident in managing multiple projects, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential - you will need to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and produce high-quality reports and updates for various audiences. You will also bring first-rate organisational abilities, the flexibility to work across a range of priorities, a good understanding of key public health challenges, and a clear commitment to reducing health inequalities across our local area.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the planning, delivery, and evaluation of public health programmes across multiple themes
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including NHS colleagues, community organisations, and service providers
  • Contribute to locality-based approaches to improve health at neighbourhood level
  • Use health data and intelligence to inform and shape project delivery
  • Coordinate and manage project timelines, milestones, and reporting
  • Support commissioning and procurement processes as required
  • Assist in the development of communication materials
  • Ensure the voices of local communities - particularly underserved groups - are reflected in service design.
  • Maintain clear project documentation and contribute to performance monitoring
  • Promote health equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work
