Job summary

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is seeking an Environmental Health Assistant to support the Environmental Health team in safeguarding public health. You will assist with food hygiene, health & safety, and environmental protection interventions across the borough, while maintaining accurate records and delivering quality regulatory services.

The role offers varied responsibilities, good training, and opportunities to develop in a dynamic regulatory environment.

Qualifications

• Five or more GCSEs and A levels in science-based subjects, to build knowledge and competence in Environmental Health.
• Background in delivering high standards of Health and Safety, Food Hygiene or Environmental Protection in the workplace.
• Willingness to develop skills to protect public health in Newcastle’s residents.

Responsibilities

• Carry out statutory sampling programmes for food, bathing waters, air quality, nuisance and private water supplies.
• Respond to environmental health service requests from residents and businesses.
• Assist with the investigation of statutory nuisance/smoke/noise complaints and installation of noise monitoring equipment.
• Investigate infectious disease notifications in partnership with UK Health Security Agency.
• Assist with inspections of licensed activities such as tattooists and skin piercing.
• Conduct inspections of lower risk premises for food safety and health and safety to ensure business compliance.
• Manage a varied caseload, prioritise workloads and make sound risk-based decisions.
• Provide clear, practical advice using professional judgement.
• Prepare reports, statistical data and information to support service delivery and maintain MIS records.
• Work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.
