Job description

The Safeguarding Families Together (SFT) team is looking for a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) to join the North Dorset & PED teams on a fixed-term/secondment basis until 31st March 2026. The SFT Families Together team aims to keep high-risk children and families in Dorset safe, improve health and educational outcomes, and reduce harm within families.

You will collaborate with social care practitioners and adult specialists to support parents dealing with domestic abuse, mental health issues, and substance misuse. Regular attendance at group supervision and your personal supervision will support a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. You will receive training in motivational interviewing and will utilize your PWP core skills, including the Step GSH step 2 techniques where appropriate.

The SFT teams include various specialists working alongside social workers and child and family workers. As a PWP, your responsibilities will include:

  1. Engaging with parents open to the SFT team.
  2. Conducting PWP assessments.
  3. Utilizing Step GSH step 2 techniques as appropriate.
  4. Participating in group-based MDT supervision in addition to your own supervision.

The SFT model focuses on delivering intervention and support, enabling social workers and adult professionals to concentrate on their core roles. Professionals from different disciplines work collaboratively, minimizing referral times and sharing family responsibilities, thereby reducing risks. The team includes social workers, child and family workers, domestic abuse practitioners and officers, recovery workers, mental health practitioners, and psychologists, all working together to support families and ensure children's safety. All team members participate in group supervision, contributing to analysis and decision-making.

This role requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will fund. Applicants subscribing to the DBS update service can present a valid DBS certificate instead of a new check.
