Job description

Ecologist Role

The Ecologist will provide ecological advice and leadership to ensure high-quality conservation outcomes, biodiversity net gain projects, and effective volunteer engagement. This role involves developing and implementing ecological strategies, conducting field surveys, managing projects, and fostering stakeholder relationships. A key focus will be maintaining and improving designated sites such as the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection Area (SPA), and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), in compliance with legislation and Dstl policies, while balancing the needs of the MOD Range and construction activities.

  1. Manage and deliver objectives within the Dstl PTN Stone Curlew Conservation Project.
  2. Ensure all activities to maintain the Stone Curlew programme are completed, working with the Ecologist, to meet legal requirements for breeding populations on the Porton Down SSI Site.
  3. Report incidents impacting the Schedule 1 Bird under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to the Secretary of State, adhering to legal obligations.
  4. Implement mandated actions to maintain SSSI, SPA, and SAC sites, fulfilling legal obligations and ensuring compliance across the PTN site.
  5. Ensure environmental regulation compliance while facilitating Dstl land use for trials and operations, acting as a liaison between Dstl, DIO, and Natural England.
  6. Maintain knowledge of legislation such as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017, and Environment Act 2021, ensuring organizational compliance.
  7. Produce reports and provide ecological advice supporting Dstl operations and developments impacting protected sites.
  8. Manage ecological data, including Recorder 2006, and review Ecological and Business Plans (BEPs).
  9. Oversee the Environmental Change Network Project as the designated Site Manager.
  10. Plan and execute projects within the PTN Rural Maintenance Plan efficiently.
  11. Support Habitat Regulations Assessments and Sustainability Appraisals with relevant data.
  12. Ensure ecological risk assessments, plans, and control measures are appropriate, monitored, and reviewed.
  13. Collect, analyze, and report ecological data to support Dstl's objectives and legal duties.
  14. Create internal and external communications as per Dstl procedures.
  15. Collaborate with the Rural Estate team to monitor and protect Stone Curlews.
  16. Maintain the archaeological area on the Dstl Range, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
