Job description

HV Commissioning Engineer

  • Location: Luton / Hertfordshire, United Kingdom
  • Rate: £70 - £80 per hour (Outside IR35)
  • Start Date: ASAP (July 2024)
  • Contract Length: 6 months

Turner Lovell are currently seeking experienced HV Commissioning Engineers for an upcoming substation project based in Luton. We are looking for professionals with hands-on experience in commissioning electrical infrastructure across voltage levels up to 400kV, including protection and control systems. This role offers a chance to work with a leading EPC contractor on high-profile energy infrastructure projects.

Scope of Work:

  • Assist and witness testing of 132kV GIS equipment
  • Commission synchronising, interlocking, protection, and SCS systems
  • Test and validate 400/132kV transformers, CTs/VTs, 132kV metering, and AIS earth switches
  • Conduct CT analyser checks and perform primary injection testing
  • Hold NG Persons Authorisation and represent the supplier as CE or Assistant CE at National Grid commissioning panel meetings

Additional systems include:
MV & LV auxiliary supplies, battery systems, DC chargers, UPS, feeders, isolators, fault throwers, CTs, VTs, and a range of relays (differential, distance, overcurrent, earth fault), inter-tripping schemes, and delayed auto-reclose functionalities.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute commissioning of components and control & protection systems on HV energy projects
  • Analyse and troubleshoot system behaviour and element interactions
  • Support and perform electrical testing (admittance, routine, and type tests)
  • Red-mark hardware drawings and contribute to technical documentation
  • Ensure handover is completed with full client briefings where required

Requirements:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (Chartered status desirable)
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in commissioning on UK or European substation projects
  • Essential certifications: NG Person, CCNSG / Safety Passport
  • Strong engineering knowledge and understanding of schematics, protection settings, and drawings
