Job description

Protection and Control Design Engineer

Mott MacDonald Bentley is a fully integrated design and build business operating across energy, water, and environment sectors throughout the UK. With an annual turnover exceeding £500 million, it is a leader in the industry, offering a robust environment for career growth.

We are seeking a Protection and Control (Secondary) Design Engineer to play a key role in the 150MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Wilton International, Teesside. This project aims to be Europe's largest battery energy storage system, contributing significantly to the UK's grid resiliency and net zero targets.

Responsibilities:
  • Work as part of the electrical design team, interfacing all electrical equipment within HV or EHV substations to implement protection and control strategies.
  • Ensure design compliance with relevant standards, legislation, customer requirements, DNO standards, and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines to deliver complex design solutions.
  • Write and understand technical documents related to protection systems.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
  • Experience with consultancy, contractor, or utility in the Power industry.
  • Proven experience in designing HVAC protection systems from 11kV to 132kV, with extended experience in 275kV and 400kV projects preferred.
  • Knowledge of UK HV and EHV substation standards and specifications.
  • Understanding of relevant British and International Standards, including ENA G99, and DNO policies like G81.
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines using appropriate software tools.
