A large international law firm is seeking a part-time Proof Reader to join their Global Business Support Document Production team. This role involves proofreading documents to ensure accuracy and adherence to company style, requiring attention to detail and strong communication skills. The position primarily allows remote work but also requires occasional in-office presence in Newcastle. The ideal candidate has at least two years of proofreading experience, preferably in a legal environment.
This job is for Clifford Chance, an inclusive employer and member of myGwork. The role is a Proof Reader position within the Global Business Support Document Production team (GBS DP). It is a part-time role (2 days per week) with day shift hours (09:00–17:00). The role can be performed mostly remotely with the expectation of coming into the Newcastle office as business needs require. Do not contact the recruiter directly.
The Proofreader supports all Practice Areas and Global offices. It requires someone with previous business experience who is self-motivated, can work with little supervision, and concentrate on repetitive tasks. The purpose is to proofread documents marked-up by lawyers or amended by Document Production Specialists (DPSs) in GBS DP. The successful candidate will proofread to the specification requested by a lawyer or DPS and liaise with Workflow Client Specialists (WCSs) at the front desk and Managers to ensure deadlines are met.
Lead on daily workflow management in-house, prioritising tasks and providing estimates and deadlines in collaboration with WCSs.
Provide an accurate and high-quality proofreading service to fee earners, reviewing amendments, word-for-word checks, copy types, format checks, conversions to Clifford Chance house style, book-reads, cross-referencing of clauses and defined terms checks.
Independently spot ambiguities and problems with sense, spelling, punctuation, style and grammar and highlight findings to the lawyer.
Ensure documents are presented in the correct house style and inform the lawyer of any deviations from best practice.
Manage jobs via the WCSs and the shared Proofing distribution list, prioritising based on bookings and deadlines.
Communicate workload, deadlines and assistance needs to WCSs, providing estimates and deadlines for submitted jobs.
Use Contract Companion proofreading software to enhance results for lawyers.
Ensure accurate use of the workflow system, ServiceNow, and seamless integration with iManage for document retrieval and return.
Complete task handovers in detail to maintain continuous, seamless service.
Collaborate with team members to provide first-class support to fee earners across GBS, including remote colleagues in Delhi, Hyderabad, Newcastle and London.
Establish and maintain effective communication with globally dispersed team members; undertake ad-hoc duties as requested by line management.
Deliver exceptional customer service; act as first point of contact on client communications and ensure timely, efficient, and accurate communications with clients.
Very good command of the English language, written and verbal.
Keen eye for detail, self-motivated, with precision focus.
Strong IT skills: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint; experience with Document Management and Job Logging systems; Adobe PDF for scanning.
Strong communication skills; ability to interact with lawyers, partners, practice assistants, trainees, paralegals and support staff.
Ability to use own initiative and judgement; experience working in a team and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment, including closing deals.
Two years of solid proofreading experience; legal environment experience is advantageous.
Flexibility in working hours driven by workload.
