Job description

About The Role

Milton Keynes Fieldwork: Project Supervisors and Project Officers (Permanent and Fixed Term Contracts)

Salary – £29,208 to £37,507
About AOC

AOC is one of the UK’s leading heritage companies, with seven regional offices and a growing team delivering archaeological and heritage projects across the country. We are a CIfA Registered Organisation and hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditations.

Why join the Milton Keynes team?

We think our team is one of the best things about working here.

The Milton Keynes office is a friendly, supportive and collaborative team, with a good mix of experience and expertise. We work hard, but we also enjoy working together, and we place a real emphasis on supporting people to develop their skills and progress their careers.

You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside experienced archaeologists across a wide range of projects, while still having the autonomy to take ownership of your own work. We are particularly keen to hear from people who want to develop their fieldwork and project management skills and become an integral part of a growing team.

Our work isn’t limited to one type of archaeology. Recent projects have included the discovery of a Roman town through geophysical survey, excavation of a Roman roadside settlement and pottery production site, a post-medieval urban settlement, and multi-period archaeological investigations associated with major infrastructure projects.

With multiple large-scale projects ongoing and scheduled for 2026 and beyond, there is plenty of opportunity to gain experience across different project types and to develop your career with us.

Role

As a Project Supervisor or Project Officer, you will play an important role in delivering projects from set-up through to completion, with opportunities to be involved in site delivery, supervision, recording, survey, reporting and publication.

You will work across a range of projects, from smaller evaluations through to large infrastructure schemes, and will be expected to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.

Although the role is based within our Milton Keynes team, occasional travel and working away from home will be required, depending on project requirements. This provides the opportunity to work on a wider range of projects across the region and further afield. Accommodation and subsistence will be provided where applicable in line with AOC’s policies.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about archaeology, take pride in the quality of their work and enjoy working collaboratively with others. For Project Officers, there will also be opportunities to take greater responsibility for the management and delivery of projects, including supervising teams and supporting reporting and publication.

We are committed to developing our staff. You will have support from experienced senior colleagues and access to training and development opportunities, with progression supported through AOC’s Job Aspiration Matrix.

About You
  • Are motivated, professional and enthusiastic about archaeology and heritage;
  • Enjoy working as part of a team and contributing to a positive working environment;
  • Are able to work independently and take responsibility for your own work;
  • Have good communication and organisational skills;
  • Are keen to develop their archaeological and project management skills;
  • Are willing and able to travel for work and occasionally work away from home, including overnight stays where project requirements dictate;
  • Have experience of archaeological fieldwork and, for Project Officer roles, experience of managing and delivering larger-scale projects;
  • Hold a relevant degree or equivalent experience;
  • Hold a CSCS card, or are willing to obtain one where required;
  • Hold a full driving licence, or are working towards obtaining one.

For the Project Officer role, experience of managing and delivering large-scale archaeological projects or survey programmes would be particularly advantageous.

Benefits
  • Salary under constant review and always current with industry recommendations;
  • Ring-fenced annual bonus scheme;
  • Company pension scheme;
  • Training budget and time allowance to attend conferences;
  • Clear and transparent job progression using AOC’s bespoke Job Aspiration Matrix;
  • Employee Assistance Programmes;
  • Support for research;
  • Paid CIFA membership; CSCS card and SSSTS and SMSTS card where required;
  • Occupational Health programme;
  • Flexible working; and
  • TOIL and sickness benefits.
