This role sits within Supply Chain Operations (SCO), an area of the business which supplies and delivers the logistics, materials, components, rail and road fleet that enable the maintenance and renewal of the railway.

SCO keeps the materials, machinery, and components required by its customers moving – making sure they are on-site when needed so work can go ahead as planned and on schedule. Watch our video.

About the role (External)

The Project Planner will play a vital role in creating and maintaining project plans within Primavera (P6) for projects within the capex portfolio. Our delivery programmes include areas such as Facilities & Fixed Plant, Electrical Safety Delivery (ESD), SCADA, and Wheeled Plant.

The Project Planner will report to the Principal Programme Planner. It is essential for candidates to have a comprehensive understanding of the project lifecycle, cost and resource loading, and the ability to manage all aspects of the schedule using Primavera. Experience working with NEC contracts is highly desirable.

  • Developing high-quality schedules and plans within the Network Rail enterprise environment
  • Cost loading within project plans
  • Resource assignment within project plans
  • Schedule assurance
  • Contractor schedule integration and review
  • Procurement tracker
  • Authority tracker
  • Input into tender processes
What does the average day look like?

In this role, you will undertake various tasks including:

  • Periodic planning review meetings with Project Managers and Programme Managers to update project plans within Primavera P6
  • Attending PACE Phase Review meetings to confirm activities are completed before moving to the next phase
  • Participating in Strategic Planning and Controls team meetings for updates and knowledge sharing
  • Collaborating with the Sponsor team to establish project activities and timelines
  • Using Power BI Dashboards for data checks
  • Joining SCO Strategic Programmes all-hands calls as needed
  • Participating in PBR meetings to track project progress

You will develop project or programme plans to meet client/business requirements in a cost-effective and reliable manner.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Provide a quality service supporting effective project delivery.
  2. Support information sharing among project stakeholders.
  3. Prepare work breakdown structures and schedules to deliver project objectives and performance measurement.
  4. Create quality plans and schedules according to principles and processes.
  5. Monitor, update, and develop recovery or contingency plans as needed.
  6. Input planning issues into the project’s risk log and review risks regularly.
  7. Report on performance, variances, and critical issues, providing assessments and solutions.
  8. Monitor contractor plans and ensure compliance with procedures.
  9. Review contractor progress statements for schedule adherence and payments.
  10. Identify key resource needs and monitor availability.
Job Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience in scheduling engineering projects successfully.
  • Knowledge of railway investment planning systems.
  • Proficiency with project management scheduling tools and techniques.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Understanding of railway engineering work requirements.
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.
  • Knowledge of Network Rail Governance (PACE & GRIP).
  • Experience with cost and resource loading.
