Job description

Help more people across Hartlepool and the Tees Valley to walk, wheel and cycle.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and community focused Project Officer to help deliver an ambitious active travel programme across Hartlepool, while also taking a Tees Valley wide lead on Events and Training Programmes.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, bringing ideas to life and creating practical opportunities for communities to get involved in walking, wheeling and cycling.

The post forms part of the Tees Valley Active Travel Engagement Support Services programme, commissioned by Tees Valley Combined Authority and delivered by a consortium led by Middlesbrough Environment City in partnership with RCVDA, Route 1 Coffee House C.I.C. and Tees Valley Rural Action.

The role:

You will be the main local contact for the programme in Hartlepool, working with residents, community organisations, schools, businesses, local partners and active travel champions to encourage and enable more people to choose active travel for everyday journeys.

Alongside your local delivery role, you will lead the programme’s Events and Training Programmes work across the Tees Valley, working with Project Officers and partners across all five local authority areas.

What makes this role different?

You will help shape and coordinate a Tees Valley wide programme of events and training opportunities, including community events, local authority and Tees Valley Combined Authority activities, ride leader training and cycle maintenance courses.

You will help develop an annual programme of activities that responds to local needs, while overseeing the practical arrangements, promotion and evaluation of programme level events and training.

This is a varied role that combines community engagement, event delivery, partnership working, volunteer support and programme coordination.

What you will be doing

You will plan and deliver active travel engagement and behaviour change activities that respond to local needs and help more people become involved in walking, wheeling and cycling.

The role will involve:

  • Building positive relationships with residents, community organisations, schools, businesses, local authorities and active travel champions.
  • Planning inclusive community engagement activities, events and outreach.
  • Developing rural outreach and working with communities that can be harder to reach through traditional services.
  • Leading social media, website and promotional activity across the wider Tees Valley programme.
  • Supporting the recruitment, induction and ongoing involvement of volunteers.
  • Managing project activity and expenditure within agreed budgets.
  • Maintaining accurate participant and activity records and contributing to programme performance reporting.
  • Producing case studies that demonstrate the impact of the programme.
  • Supporting safe delivery through appropriate risk assessment, safeguarding and data protection procedures.
About you

Experience of delivering against funder or commissioner performance targets, local knowledge of Darlington and the Tees Valley, or ride leader or cycle mechanic qualifications would be particularly welcome.

You will have a relevant degree or equivalent qualification, or at least three years of experience working with community groups.

You will bring experience of communications, social media and campaign delivery, together with an understanding of how to engage rural or geographically dispersed communities.

You will also have experience of supporting volunteers and working effectively with community groups and local organisations.

You should have an understanding of active travel, behaviour change and community engagement, alongside experience of planning and delivering events, activities or workshops.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, good organisation and the ability to manage your own workload are important. You will also need to be confident using Microsoft Office, handling data and working through online platforms.
