Full time starting salary is normally in the range £32,546 to £35,116 with potential progression once in post to £39,355

Background

The Research Programmes and Infrastructure team, part of the College of Medical & Dental Sciences Research Office, is a vibrant hub for Professional Service staff (~80 individuals) supporting high-value, strategically important projects and programmes. We work closely with both Professional Services colleagues and Academics across the University and partner organisations, to maximise the impact of funded research, and lead on the development of renewals for large infrastructure awards.

The Project Officer role will be embedded within Birmingham Centre for Observational Studies (BiCOPS) and, more broadly, Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit.The role will be located in Public Health Building - and benefit from established relationships with programme partners and key stakeholders including NHS Trusts, collaborating research institutions locally, nationally, patient and public contributors, charities and funders.

Role Summary

The post holder will join a team of Professional Services staff providing management and administrative support to the Perioperative medicine for older people undergoing surgery scale up (POPS-SUp) study.

The post holder will support the BiCOPS Management Team to ensure the POPS-SUp study is delivered in line with milestones set with the funder, working closely with a wide range of UK academic staff, as well as colleagues in the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) and other staff in BiCOPS.

Our ethos is inclusive and collaborative: we work across clinical disciplines with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, medical students, other healthcare professionals and non-clinicians including policy makers, epidemiologists and economists, as well as patients and community members.

Main Duties

  • To support Project Management Committees, workstreams and working groups.
  • Support the Project Managers and Programme Managers with dissemination of key project outcomes.
  • Support the preparing of progress reports for committee meetings, project planning, and delivering on sub-projects/small projects which will be defined on a continuing basis.
  • Draw up project plans, including key performance indicators, identifying milestones as appropriate.
  • Contribute to milestone tracking/key performance indicator tracking.
  • Assisting with stakeholder management and maintaining regular contact with national stakeholders to understand requirements, and review, develop and propose solutions for any issues.
  • Appropriately assess and escalate issues and risks.
  • Assist in the management of project resources and/or budgets.
  • Contribute to developing communications plans, presentations, and promoting the projects and outcomes of projects/workstreams.
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of project management methodologies.
  • Determine short term priorities for work, and how to maximise quality, efficiency and continuity.
  • Assist in the evaluation and review of projects.
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
  • Undertake other duties as reasonably requested by Line Manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Qualified to UK level 5 (e.g. Foundation degree, HND) or equivalent.
  • Project management experience.
  • An understanding of applied health research.
  • Experience of providing administration support to the delivery of research.
  • Excellent IT skills, with working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software and using custom systems and databases.
  • Experience of using reference manager software to support the writing of academic publications.
  • Knowledge of the University’s financial and contract systems. Experience of budget management.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.

Dimensions

The role will not be required to line manage anyone in this role or manage a budget.

Planning and Organising

The role holder will need to forward plan, and deliver project plans, reporting to internal and possibly external stakeholders. The role is operating within defined requirements, systems and processes, but does consider and recommend improvements.

Problem Solving and decision making

This role will be expected to assist in the delivery of POPS-SUp study, assess and escalate risk, and make recommendations for improvements. The role will be likely to operate within constraints set by project leads/project boards.

The role will take the day-to-day operational decisions relating to the project delivery, and will support Project Leads and Project Boards in reaching informed decisions about the project delivery.

The role is a key liaison and co-ordination role on this project, so will have a range of internal and potentially external stakeholders.
