Job description

An opportunity has arisen for a Project Manager to join the Mk2 Radar Team to support management activities across a variety of work packages and Programme forums.

The role requires close liaison with both the incumbent Project Managers and wider Integrated Project Team (IPT) which is comprised of a large, multi-site cross functional skillset of engineers and professionals from across the business. In addition, the role may occasionally necessitate a level of Work Package management as required by the Project.

Maintaining customer satisfaction via the regular and timely provision of data to the complex Customer stakeholder community will be vital to continuing project success. In addition, key to this will be the effective planning and management of team performance and project adherence to schedule and cost constraints.

What you will do as a Project Manager:

  • Reporting to the Lead Project Manager, the Project Manager role will support the incumbent Project Management team with management of IPT Project Engineering Leads and a number of internal functions including Engineering, Quality Assurance, Planning, Finance, Operations, Procurement and Commercial.
  • Support to Project Engineering Leads with respect to Work Package Management and the identification of risks to budget and schedule.
  • Support to the Lead Project Manager in the management of complex projects within the programme.
  • Direct management responsibilities for smaller projects within the programme.
  • Close liaison with the Planning Function ensuring work package status constantly reflects current position with actual performance against planned cost and schedule being closely monitored.
  • Monitoring and Control of all activities and costs within the projects. Defining and implementing corrective actions required to tackle any deviations from the planned activities.
  • Support to project risk reviews, ensuring identified risks and opportunities are being suitably actioned and monitored and their impact on project performance assessed pre and post mitigation.
  • Take an active role in managing the transition from the development to low rate initial production phase of the programme and the changes this entails.
  • Support to management reporting of Multi-Discipline IPT and Sub-contract activities, including input to Project Performance Reviews. Coordinating all internal reviews, you will manage the resultant actions to closure.
  • Promote best practice of knowledge sharing and establishing clear success criteria for each member of the IPT, you will coordinate activities through class leading communication and planning skills.
  • Manage and report the IPT’s activities, including occasional representation of the IPT at Project performance Reviews.
  • This is primarily an office based role using display screen equipment but also requires occasional presence in Laboratory & Manufacturing environments.
  • The role will require an average of 3 days a week on site presence at the Edinburgh site.
  • Periodic travel within the UK and abroad is anticipated with overnight stays as required.
  • Support to Bids & Proposal generation typically within short timescales.

What we need from you:

What you really must have

  • You will typically be educated to degree standard, ideally in a business or engineering related discipline or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Project Management (or related discipline) experience across a number of phases of the project execution life cycle.
  • Experience or desire to lead a small to medium size Engineering teams through the transition from Development into a Production environment.

It would be nice if you had:

  • Experience within engineering, procurement and/or finance functions would be advantageous.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining strong supply base relations.
  • An awareness of supporting functions such as Quality Assurance, Manufacturing and Configuration Control would be advantageous.
  • Exposure and experience in all aspects of project planning, scheduling, work package management and cost control.
