Position Summary:

  • Position Title: Project Manager Commissioned Research / Policy & Advocacy Advisor (UK)
  • Reporting Relationship: Chief of Staff / Director, Impact & Engagement

Team: Centre for Research Evidence & Skills Training (CREST) / Impact & Engagement

Location: UK; the position holder is expected to work from the London office 2+ days per week

Employment Duration: 2 years with the possibility of extension

Type of employment: Full-time, fixed-term

Salary: £55,000 - £64,000 per annum (dependent on experience)

Start date: ASAP

Context of the Role

This role has two aspects:

  • Developing and implementing a strategy for commissioned research and health consultancy in the UK, as part of the Institute's global CREST programme (60%).
  • Implementing a programme of policy engagement and advocacy in the UK, as a member of the Institute's global Impact & Engagement team (40%).
The Role

The George Institute seeks a motivated candidate experienced in policy engagement, advocacy, and project management in the consultancy sector.

The Project Manager will lead UK consultancy and commissioned research projects, manage business development and client engagement, and support research proposal development. The role also involves leading initiatives and developing processes to support global projects. Additionally, as UK Policy and Advocacy Advisor, the role involves implementing policy engagement and advocacy strategies, building relationships with stakeholders, and increasing research impact.

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in health research project management, business development, and advocacy within the UK health sector, with experience in large tenders and high-level stakeholder engagement.

Reporting Relationships

This position initially reports to the Chief of Staff and the Director, Impact & Engagement, with broad consultation across teams including the UK Executive Director and Chief Scientist.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

The role includes activities such as:

  • Commissioned Research Strategy: Conduct market analysis, identify opportunities, develop systems and tools, and report on research outcomes.
  • Business Development & Delivery: Develop materials, prepare proposals, and assist with research projects.
  • Policy Engagement: Develop UK government engagement strategies, stakeholder mapping, and impact pathways.
  • Advocacy: Represent the Institute in UK health advocacy networks, develop advocacy materials, and support related activities.
  • Revenue Generation: Incorporate advocacy in grant proposals and support policy briefs, reports, and events.

Key Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
  • Degree in public health, business administration, or related field.
  • Significant experience in advocacy, policy influence, and health research management.
  • Experience with high-level stakeholder engagement, including government and multilateral agencies.
  • Knowledge of UK health policy and advocacy issues (desirable).
  • Strong project management skills, familiarity with funding processes, and ability to communicate complex research effectively.
