Job description

Ember is seeking a strategic and collaborative Project Manager to lead on developing and embedding consistent project management practices across our organisation — ensuring that our research and data outputs are delivered to a high standard, on time, and with maximum impact. This role will not only project manage key outputs such as the Global Electricity Review, but also focus on building the tools, systems, and processes that empower our teams to manage projects effectively and consistently — from flagship reports to shorter analytical outputs and data-driven stories.

Ember has built a strong reputation for using data and research to shape global climate and energy policy. As we grow, we're looking for a Project Manager who will lead the development and implementation of a consistent project management approach across the organisation — ensuring our work is delivered with excellence, impact, and efficiency.

You will be central to driving effective cross-team collaboration across policy, data, communications, and operations — supporting the planning, development and launch of a range of outputs which are aligned with Ember's Theory of Change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and embed consistent project management approaches across the organisation, including processes, templates, tools, and guidance
  • Provide training and resources to build internal capacity in project management and foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Support teams to deliver high-quality outputs, including reports, data stories, and other publications — by providing project planning support, coaching, and troubleshooting
  • Identify and implement opportunities for streamlining and scaling our project delivery processes, including through the use of automation and AI tools
  • Lead the project management of key flagship reports such as the Global Electricity Review, coordinating input from across Ember's international team and ensuring timelines, deliverables, and quality standards are met:
  • Monitor and report on project progress to Ember's senior leadership team, identifying risks and opportunities and proposing solutions
  • Coordinate the involvement of the Project Advisory Board and Ember's Non-Executive Board
  • Coordinate the involvement of third parties, including translators and designers
  • Use your emotional intelligence and leadership skills to persuade team members, resolve conflicts, and harness each team member's superpowers.
  • Monitor how projects are running across the organisation - including compliance with agreed processes, team engagement, and coordination challenges - and proactively identify and address problems or bottlenecks
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of projects and outputs, capturing lessons learned, identifying opportunities for improvement, and supporting continuous learning and adaptation

Location: Fully remote (must be in a timezone between GMT and GMT +8)

Requirements

Must have:

  • At least 3 years of experience in project management in a research or policy context, managing the production of published reports or data-driven analysis, and with a track record of delivering complex, lengthy projects
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, in a fluid, fast-paced and highly collaborative setting
  • Experience supporting others to deliver work effectively — e.g. through training, coaching, or developing systems and processes
  • Familiarity with tools for automating workflows, task management, or collaborative project delivery
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and effectively for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Interpersonal skills to drive effective collaboration and resolve any conflicts or challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and funders

Nice to have:

  • Passion for addressing climate change and promoting the transition to clean energy
  • Experience project managing the publication of reports/publications
  • Experience with selecting and setting up project management software
  • Experience with productivity improvement with AI tools

We are an equal opportunities employer committed to diversity and treating all employees with dignity and respect regardless of background.

Benefits

£41,705 - £48,826 . Salaries may be adjusted depending on a location cost of living formula, but will not be below 75% of advertised figure.

Contract: Full time (but only working 9 days every fortnight with no reduction in pay), permanent subject to a 3 month probationary period. For employees based outside of the UK, a local payroll contract is available, dependent on the country.

Remote culture and diverse team: Ember is a remote-first organisation, with talents of diverse backgrounds from 15+ countries over the world.

Further benefits: We offer a competitive benefits package, including:

  • We operate a nine-day fortnight meaning our full-time staff are given every other Friday off work with no reduction in pay
  • A minimum of 25 days holiday, plus public holidays
  • For each year that you're part of the team at Ember you'll receive an additional day of holiday, up to a maximum of 5 additional days.
  • Generous paid maternity and paternity leave
  • Flexible working conditions, including the opportunity for part-time work and home working
  • Access to a local working space can be arranged
  • Free annual eye tests
  • Access to a counselling service
  • Funding and allocated time for your training and development
  • Paid volunteer day
  • Four paid days off to enable low carbon travel
  • Time off to donate blood
