Job description

Our mission

Carbon removal, alongside emissions reductions, is essential to preserving a stable climate. We focus on addressing knowledge, policy, and ambition gaps to build a carbon removal ecosystem that delivers real progress on climate change.

Leadership from European countries, including the UK, is critical for scaling carbon removal to meet global climate goals and fostering a progressive vision free from fossil fuel or corporate dominance. Europe needs carbon removal to:

  1. Meet its net-zero targets
  2. Address its historical emissions contributing to warming

Europe has the financial capacity and political will to scale climate solutions, but lacks a dedicated, honest voice for carbon removal. Carbon Gap aims to be that voice.

The role

Carbon Gap is a leading, independent non-profit organization dedicated to carbon removal in Europe, with the largest team of policy professionals based in Brussels and other European capitals. Since our launch at COP26, we have published influential papers, gained media recognition, and our Policy Directors serve as EU policy advisors. Our mission is to make Europe a global leader in carbon removal and meet its net-zero commitments.

We seek experienced carbon removal and policy professionals to join our team, helping us realize our vision of safe, effective, and socially responsible carbon removal. If you are ambitious and want to impact climate policy, we want to hear from you.

As a project manager and research analyst, you will lead a large, multi-component project, managing activities and teams, supervising quality, and engaging with our network for adoption. You will also contribute to research projects to enhance our expertise and support advocacy efforts, working with a respected team and engaging with leaders across sectors. The role involves project coordination, research, writing, and strategic thinking.

This role is ideal for an engineer or experienced project manager with interest and background in CDR or climate policy. We will support your growth in climate, environment, and policy issues, providing a platform to expand your professional impact and network.

Project Coordinator
  • Manage a large research project, ensuring effective organization and delivery
  • Set priorities, oversee project management, and coordinate teams
  • Plan future phases and report launches
Research and Analysis
  • Ensure quality and objectives of project outputs
  • Research carbon removal science, policy, and markets, including pathways, monitoring, governance, and social license
  • Analyze policies in the UK, EU, and other jurisdictions
  • Contribute to establishing governance, standards, and certifications
  • Analyze the commercial market and technological developments
  • Create research summaries, briefs, and policy materials for advocacy
Communicator
  • Present project progress to diverse audiences
  • Engage with partners to promote reports and deliverables
  • Author and contribute to policy reports, social media, blogs, and stakeholder interviews
Your profile
  • Masters degree or 3-4 years relevant experience in sciences, social sciences, economics, or data science, with a portfolio of projects or publications
  • Familiarity with carbon removal and climate science; previous related projects/publications are a plus
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with a problem-solving attitude
  • Passion for climate action and understanding of the climate crisis
  • Comfort with learning new material, digesting scientific papers, and simplifying complex topics
  • Focus on results, strategic thinking, and relationship-building skills
What we offer
  • Fixed-term, full-time contract (40h/week) under Belgian or UK law, with potential for permanence
  • Competitive salary, benefits including lunch vouchers, pension, health insurance, and transport reimbursement
  • Supportive team environment with social activities
