Job summary

A leading recruitment agency is seeking a Project Manager for a nuclear new build project in the UK. The successful candidate will oversee engineering studies, manage multidisciplinary teams, and ensure timely project delivery with a budget up to GBP100m. Required qualifications include a degree in Project Management or related fields and at least 5 years of experience in large-scale projects. Proficiency in English at CEFR Level B2 or higher is mandatory. This role falls inside IR35.

Job description

We are seeking a Project Manager to join the team on the Sizewell C nuclear new build project. This is a contract role running until the end of December, based in London, with relocation to Ipswich from January 2026. There is also an opportunity for the role to be based in Avonmouth.

The role holder will:

  1. Take a global overview of the nuclear power plant Systems, Structures, and Components (SSCs) to maximize replication from HPC and prepare for key contracts.
  2. Ensure the timely delivery of engineering studies by the RD or key contractors, meeting the project's needs.
  3. Prepare specific post-FID contracts with the multidisciplinary team, including terms, conditions, and technical specifications.
  4. Drive the implementation of SZC site-specific design changes into design deliverables, including contract specifications for robust pricing.
  5. Manage internal and external interfaces to ensure coordinated design and delivery.
  6. Engage with stakeholders to identify obsolescence issues and other risks.
  7. Manage the technical aspects of procurement for specific contracts.
  8. Practice lessons learned and knowledge capture as standard procedures.
  9. Develop strategies aligned with the overall programme execution plan (PEP).
  10. Define work scope and interfaces within contracts or work packages.
  11. Ensure safe, timely, and budget-compliant delivery of contract activities.
  12. Ensure contractual requirements are fulfilled.
  13. Work with multidisciplinary teams to prepare manufacturing and construction contracts.
  14. Implement SZC site-specific design changes effectively.

Nuclear Safety Accountabilities: The role may include nuclear safety and environmental responsibilities, impacting safety through activities performed, as detailed in the Nuclear and Environmental Baseline.

Depending on the area of work:

  • Manage up to 3 direct reports plus a matrix team of other disciplines.
  • Coordinate with EDF France and SZC Site Construction Team within a matrix organization.
  • Handle contracts valued between GBP50m and GBP100m depending on the programme.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree and Chartered status in Project Management, Construction, Civil Engineering, or relevant discipline.
  • Knowledge of Project Management, construction activities, and experience managing major projects from concept to handover.
  • English proficiency at CEFR Level B2 or above.
  • Background in mechanical, electrical, process, systems, or civil engineering for large industrial plants.

Desirable:

  • Previous nuclear industry experience.
  • Chartered Engineer and formal project management qualifications.
  • Experience in procuring equipment or installation contracts for nuclear stations.
  • Understanding of complex project interfaces and procurement processes.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience managing multidisciplinary teams.

Experience:

  • Marine/Tunnelling experience is mandatory.
  • At least 5 years as a Project Manager.
  • Large-scale project experience.
  • Availability to work in London 3 days/week until end of 2025, then in Orwell Logistics Park 3 days/week thereafter.
