Job summary

Apple Technical Recruitment (UK) is seeking a Project Manager in Cambridge to lead a c£10m New Build Higher Education project for a key client. The role requires delivering on time, to high quality and with strong Health & Safety standards.

You will develop detailed programmes, manage site setup, secure permissions, control the budget with the QS, coordinate with design teams and subcontractors, and mentor the site team to drive successful handover.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management or comparable qualification.
  • CSCS Card and SMSTS certifications.
  • Experience with main contractor projects and HE projects is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the project and report to Contracts Manager.
  • Develop and manage detailed programmes, timelines, and site setup.
  • Obtain planning permissions and building regulation approvals.
  • Oversee budget with the Quantity Surveyor and ensure value for money.
  • Coordinate procurement and manage subcontractors to secure best value.
  • Lead and mentor the site team and maintain safety standards.
  • Maintain client and stakeholder communications with regular reporting.
  • Identify risks and manage changes per contract procedures.
  • Ensure seamless client handover after final inspections.

Salary: c£70k-£80k basic plus competitive package inc car allowance, pension, bonus, market leading holiday allowance etc.

Company & Project: A successful and privately owned Main Contractor with decades of experience delivering projects across East Anglia are currently growing their operations team in Cambridge.

A flagship build for the business, valued at c£10m, the project is a New Build Higher Education project working for a key client.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The successful candidate will take responsibility for overseeing the project whilst reporting to a visiting Contracts Manager.
  • Develop and manage detailed project programmes, timelines, and site setup plans, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently across all phases.
  • Obtain all necessary planning permissions, statutory permits, and building regulation approvals prior to and during construction.
  • Partner with the Quantity Surveyor to oversee the project budget, maintaining tight financial control from start to finish.
  • Adopt current and emerging industry software to streamline project delivery, progress tracking, and team collaboration.
  • Oversee procurement for materials and plant, negotiating with and managing subcontractors to secure best value and ensure smooth site operations.
  • Lead, mentor, and motivate the site team, supporting their professional development and managing performance constructively when required.
  • Coordinate effectively with clients, design teams, and key stakeholders, keeping everyone aligned through clear, consistent updates and formal reporting.
  • Spot potential project risks early, putting robust mitigation plans in place and managing scope changes through the correct contract procedures.
  • Champion a strong safety culture on site, conducting regular inspections to ensure all works meet strict health, safety, and quality standards.
  • Administer contracts diligently, resolve disputes professionally, and manage final inspections to ensure a seamless client handover.

You will be need to be an excellent communicator, with a track record for successfully delivering projects over £5m on time, to a high quality and promoting excellent standards of Health and Safety.

Desirable Experience:
  • Previously held a Project Manager role with a Main Contractor.
  • Previous experience working on a Higher Education or Education project would be advantageous.
  • Exceptional client facing and management skills, experience in leading teams.
  • Ideally from a Site Management or Engineering background.
  • Previous Roles: Contracts Manager OR Project Manager OR Senior Project Manager OR Senior Site Manager.
Qualifications & Skills:

Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management or comparable qualification.

CSCS Card, SMSTS

ASTA PowerProject software use and Procore software use would be advantageous
