Job Description:

The Opportunity

Leonardo has a fantastic opportunity for a Project Engineering Lead on a permanent basis for delivery of a Beyond Line of Sight Satellite Communications Subsystem. The Project Engineering Lead will need to be a talented and experienced Engineering Leader, familiar with working on complex electronic (ideally RF-based) sensor systems.

The Project Engineering Lead will have hands-on experience of leading multi-discipline engineering projects across the engineering lifecycle, managing a diverse range of stakeholder needs and requirements to achieve the desired outcome.

This Project Engineering Lead role is within the Comms & Force Protection (C&FP) business group, and will focus on providing team management, technical direction and leadership in conjunction with the Project Engineering Manager and Project Chief Engineer.

What you will get:

  • Continuous Learning: Whether it’s engineering lifecycle processes, leadership, or personal development, you’ll be supported in your ongoing professional development through training and mentoring.
  • Teamwork: You will work alongside like-minded professional engineers in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Connections: You will be joining an expansive team of around 7,000 people at six major sites across the UK.

What you will do:

  • Management of multi-disciplined Engineering teams, ensuring that roles within the teams are clearly defined.
  • Establish and maintain good lines of communication across the Engineering IPT and upwards to the Project Engineering Manager.
  • Management of the engineering project plan.
  • Management, tracking and reporting against project milestones.
  • Ensuring effective implementation of the company's Life-cycle design reviews, including preparation and presentation of design review material.
  • Upward reporting and management of Customer expectations in line with agreed solution.
  • Supplier and subcontractor engagement; support to Make or Buy decisions as required.
  • Control project configuration and change management particularly with regard to design baselines and production build standards.
  • Identifying technical risks and mitigation strategies e.g. with test solutions or obsolescence.
  • Input to Material Review Boards and Failure Review Boards.
  • Concession management – ensuring effective closure plans are in place and enacted.

What we are looking for:

You really must have:

  • Good technical understanding of antennas and RF based sensor systems, ideally within the Satcomms domain.
  • Good problem solving ability.
  • Good schedule and budget control.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commercially aware.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership competency but also can demonstrate team working skills.
  • Knowledge of engineering life-cycle and business process.
  • Degree qualification or equivalent.

It would be nice if you had:

  • Experience of working in the defence electronics sector, ideally with airborne sensor systems.
  • Experience of working with UK MOD (e.g. RAF, DSTL, DE&S).
  • An understanding of the deployment of airborne military platforms, systems and operation within the enterprise environment.
  • An understanding of radar-guided surface-to-air missile systems, and other radar-based threats.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or a member of a professional engineering institution.
