Project Engineer – Utilities Systems - Indiana

Our food production client, located in central Indiana, is actively seeking a Project Engineer – Utilities Systems. Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, the Project Engineer will be responsible for developing and executing capital projects related to critical infrastructure and utilities, including steam systems, compressed air, ammonia refrigeration, wastewater treatment, HVAC systems, and facility infrastructure. This role supports plant reliability, energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of production operations.

Project Engineer Responsibilities:
  1. Capital Project Management:
  • Develop and implement project plans for utilities-related capital and infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with company goals and timelines.
  • Lead projects from conception through commissioning, including scoping, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, construction, and validation.
  • Monitor and control project schedules, budgets, and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.
  • Identify opportunities for system upgrades, efficiency improvements, and reliability enhancements.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination:
    • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, environmental, safety, and quality teams to minimize operational disruptions during projects.
    • Coordinate with external vendors, contractors, and consultants to ensure adherence to technical specifications and standards.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Provide engineering expertise and troubleshooting support for utility systems, including steam, compressed air, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC, and wastewater.
    • Conduct site inspections, assessments, and risk evaluations to inform project needs.
    • Lead efforts to optimize existing utility infrastructure for current and future demands.
  • Documentation & Compliance:
    • Maintain thorough documentation such as drawings, P&IDs, project charters, and reports.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, ASHRAE, IIAR, and other relevant standards and regulations.
    • Support process safety management efforts, especially for ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • Continuous Improvement & Collaboration:
    • Partner with production teams to enhance manufacturing processes and infrastructure reliability.
    • Implement energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives aligned with company goals.
    • Assist in developing capital plans and budgets for utility systems.
    • Promote a safety culture by prioritizing incident prevention and best practices.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals.
    Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering or related field.
    • At least 10 years of engineering experience in utilities, infrastructure, or manufacturing, preferably in food processing.
    • Experience with plant utility systems, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC, and wastewater systems is highly preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of utility system design, operation, and maintenance.
    • Proficiency with project management tools, engineering software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.), and MS Office.
    • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, IIAR, NFPA, EPA, OSHA).
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple complex projects independently.
    • Adaptability to a fast-paced environment and varying conditions.
    • Willingness to work beyond regular hours, including weekends, as needed.
