Job description

Job Description

Project Engineer - R&T Demonstrators Derby 37 hours per week

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our Development Engineering organisation, working within Research & Technology (R&T) Demonstrators.

Why join Rolls-Royce? At Rolls-Royce we are proud to be a business that has truly helped to shape the modern world and are committed to always being a force for progress; powering, protecting and connecting people everywhere.

By joining Rolls-Royce, you'll have the opportunity to work on world-class solutions, supported by a culture that believes individuality is our greatest strength, and all perspectives, experiences and backgrounds help us innovate and enable our high-performance culture.

Our Project Engineers work at the heart of complex development programmes, turning engineering objectives into clear, executable plans and bringing together the people, resources, information and activities needed to deliver them successfully.

The role will provide the opportunity to support challenging demonstrator programmes, working across engineering and organisational boundaries and taking responsibility for the successful delivery of defined packages of work.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys bringing structure to complex engineering challenges, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and taking real ownership for scope, resources, cost and delivery.

What you will be doing

As a Project Engineer, you will work with specialists and stakeholders from across the business to plan, integrate and deliver engineering activities. Depending on your assignment, you may:

  • Work with engineering and programme teams to define objectives, scope, deliverables and success criteria.
  • Develop and maintain integrated plans covering engineering activities, dependencies and key milestones.
  • Identify the skills and resources required to deliver your package of work, including internal FTE and external/offload requirements.
  • Develop, understand and control the budget for your area of responsibility, ensuring resources and expenditure remain aligned with the delivery plan.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and bring together the expertise needed to deliver project objectives.
  • Support the planning and delivery of development, test and verification activities.
  • Coordinate engineering activities associated with demonstrator hardware, rigs, instrumentation, measurement and test where relevant.
  • Understand progress against the plan, identifying emerging risks, issues and dependencies and driving appropriate actions.
  • Ensure actions and deliverables have clear ownership and are followed through to completion.
  • Bring together the engineering information and evidence required to support technical decisions and programme milestones.
  • Support funding reviews with partner agencies, providing the plans, progress, resource and cost information required.
  • Communicate progress, risks, opportunities, priorities and financial/resource position clearly to stakeholders.
  • Work across organisational boundaries to resolve problems and maintain momentum towards project objectives.
  • Identify and support improvements in the way engineering projects are planned and delivered.
What we're looking for

We are looking for someone who combines engineering understanding with strong integration, organisation and delivery skills. You should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience working within an engineering, technical or product-development environment.
  • The ability to understand engineering challenges and translate them into practical plans and activities.
  • Strong coordination skills and an ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • An ability to work across different technical disciplines and organisational boundaries.
  • The confidence to ask the right questions, challenge constructively and create clarity when requirements, priorities or responsibilities are uncertain.
  • An ability to understand and manage risks, issues, dependencies and competing priorities.
  • An ability to understand the resources required to deliver engineering work and turn this into credible resource and cost plans.
  • An ability to take ownership of budgets and understand the relationship between scope, resource, cost and delivery.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative approach and a willingness to develop your understanding of new technical areas.

You do not need to be the technical expert in every area you work with.

An important part of Project Engineering is being able to understand the engineering challenge, bring the right people together, determine the resources required and create the structure and momentum needed to deliver successfully.
