Job Purpose:

Manage the use of appropriate engineering standards related to design and construction across all projects, ensuring compliance with current legislation, Railway Group, and Network Rail standards. Monitor the employment of qualified and experienced staff to oversee engineering aspects within the discipline.

A little more about your role…
  • Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost-effective, high-quality, safe, and environmentally responsible approach to design, commissioning, and technical activities, complying with all relevant legislation. Liaise with regulators as appropriate.
  • Engineer projects to Network Rail standards and specifications, ensuring design and contracts reference and comply with Railway Group and Network Rail standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Apply engineering controls and procedures to all projects, verifying that design and construction works adhere to Railway Group and Network Rail standards.
  • Manage engineering activities to deliver schemes that are affordable, meet program requirements, and are safe and environmentally responsible in terms of time, cost, and quality.
  • Utilize risk assessment and HAZOP analysis techniques for projects and manage environmental aspects in line with Network Rail’s policies.
  • Provide project management advice, including testing, commissioning, and site supervision, ensuring compliance with legislation and regulations.
  • Monitor project compliance with standards and control procedures.
  • Advise project and program management on construction activities, testing, commissioning, and site supervision, ensuring design and construction meet legislative requirements, including CDM regulations.
  • Ensure personnel involved in design and construction are competent.
  • Review design activities and arrange audits of contractors to monitor safety, environment, and quality systems.
  • Conduct accident investigations when assigned.
  • Identify and share best practices across project teams.

Essential:

  • Relevant multidisciplinary experience.
  • Experience in engineering disciplines, especially with construction and design projects across multiple disciplines.
  • Working towards chartered status with a professional body.
  • Experience in the NR/L2/RSE/02009 Project Engineer role as a discipline expert.
  • Knowledge of structuring safety cases for projects.
  • Understanding of safety management and quality assurance.
  • Experience in accident investigation.
  • Technical qualifications at HNC/HND or equivalent GNVQ level.
  • Understanding of independent assessment arrangements for work.
  • Risk assessment and engineering management skills.
  • This is a permanent position; contractors are not considered.

Desirable:

  • Additional knowledge of safety case structuring.
  • Awareness of environmental issues in engineering.
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.
  • Experience in project safety management.
