A major Rail and Transportation client in Manchester is seeking a Project Engineer to join their Metrolink Renewals and Enhancement Projects team. The ideal candidate should have 4-5 years of experience in rail or light rail engineering, particularly with Overhead Line Equipment and high voltage systems. This permanent role supports a hybrid working model with 2 days in office and 3 days from home.

Morson Talent are currently seeking a Project Engineer to join the Metrolink Renewals and Enhancement Projects (MREP) team for a major Rail and Transportation client. The client is looking for someone someone with around 4 5 years experience in rail or light rail engineering who is ready to move from current grad scheme but not yet at senior or principal level.
The ideal candidate will have experience in Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) and high voltage (HV) systems, preferably from a light rail, electrification, or Network Rail (NWR) background.
This role provides multidisciplinary engineering support, ensuring that all works are designed, delivered and commissioned to meet quality, safety and reliability standards.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Assurance
Specify and review engineering requirements for renewals and enhancements.
Oversee and sign off multi-disciplinary designs, specifications and technical documentation.
Manage contractors on-site, ensuring quality, safety and environmental standards are met.
Conduct audits, inspections and technical reviews during design, construction, testing and commissioning.
Support project handover, reviewing Health & Safety files and handback documentation.
Technical Support
Provide expert knowledge in civils, track, electrification, signalling, telecoms and customer-facing assets.
Support Metrolink asset engineers and ensure contractor proposals meet client standards.
Respond to technical issues and incidents; prepare technical briefs and design appraisals.
Site Inspections & Defect Management
Identify and manage defects and quality issues during construction and initial operation.
Carry out site visits in all weather conditions to resolve urgent technical matters.
Stakeholder & Contractor Management
Develop strong working relationships with contractors, consultants and stakeholders.
Negotiate and influence to ensure value for money and compliance with client standards.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure all works comply with health, safety, legal and regulatory requirements, applying ALARP principles.
Review tenders, technical proposals and risk assessments.
Essential Requirements
Significant experience in light or heavy rail, including design and site-based construction work.
Strong understanding of rail standards, legal requirements and best practice.
Experience managing technical interfaces across multiple engineering disciplines.
Degree-level qualification (Civil Engineering or similar).
Computer literate, with strong MS Office skills.
Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
Able to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
Physically fit to obtain a Personal Track Safety (PTS) qualification.
Desirable Experience
Previous experience in light rail renewals, including planning, construction, testing and commissioning.
Knowledge of Network Rail systems and track/civil engineering project work.
Experience of contract management and supplier engagement.
Evidence of ongoing professional development.
