Job summary

GS Group is partnering with a global leader in pharmaceutical process and automation equipment, seeking a Project Safety Engineer to own engineering safety, regulatory compliance and ATEX across major equipment projects. This is a technical engineering role at the intersection of machine design, automation, ATEX and compliance, ensuring equipment can be designed, assessed, certified and delivered safely.

The position is site-based in the UK.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Process or related Engineering.
• Experience with machinery safety and regulatory compliance.
• Knowledge of ATEX, DSEAR and hazardous-area classifications.
• Ability to prepare and defend technical documentation and FS evidence.

Responsibilities

• Own and develop engineering Technical Files throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead machinery risk assessments, safety reviews and compliance activities.
• Provide expertise across ATEX, DSEAR and hazardous-area classification.
• Collaborate with design teams on ISO 12100, IEC 60079 standards.
• Interface with notified bodies during equipment approval.
• Support testing, site surveys and commissioning.

PROJECT SAFETY ENGINEER – ATEX & MACHINERY SAFETY

Salary: Up to £55,000

Type: Permanent, Site-Based

We are partnering with a global leader in pharmaceutical process and automation equipment, supporting the design and delivery of complex capital machinery used by major pharmaceutical manufacturers worldwide.

About the Role

They are looking for a Project Safety Engineer to take ownership of engineering safety, regulatory compliance and ATEX across major equipment projects.

This is a genuinely technical engineering position not a traditional H&S role. You will work at the intersection of machine design, automation, ATEX and regulatory compliance, ensuring complex equipment can be designed, assessed, certified and delivered safely.

Responsibilities

• Own and develop engineering Technical Files throughout the project lifecycle
• Lead machinery risk assessments, safety reviews and compliance activities
• Provide technical expertise across ATEX, DSEAR, hazardous-area classification and explosion protection
• Work with standards including ISO 12100, IEC 60079 and machinery safety requirements
• Act as a key technical contact with third-party and notified bodies during equipment approval
• Present, explain and defend engineering decisions and supporting technical evidence
• Work closely with mechanical, electrical, controls and automation engineers
• Review safety functions including interlocks, emergency circuits and safety-related control systems
• Support testing, validation, site surveys and commissioning
• Investigate technical issues, root causes and corrective actions
• Provide technical support across UK and international projects

• Knowledge of ISO 12100 and IEC 60079, ideally alongside IEC 60204-1 or ISO 13849
• Experience working with certification bodies, notified bodies, auditors or external assessors
• The technical confidence to explain and defend engineering decisions to demanding stakeholders

Preferred Skills

• CMSE, CompEx, functional safety or notified-body experience would be highly advantageous.
