About us

At National Gas, the work we do matters.

As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role

Help keep one of the UK's most important gas terminals operating safely, reliably, and efficiently. As a Project E&I Technician for our gas terminal in Bacton, you'll undertake installation, inspection, commissioning, operation, and emergency response activities that support the secure transportation of gas across the National Transmission System.

The East Region is home to the strategically significant Bacton North Sea Gas Terminal, seven compressor stations, and key technical teams that help keep gas moving across the country. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining critical infrastructure that supports the UK's energy security today and into the future.

Why this role matters

Every day, homes, businesses, and industries rely on the safe and dependable operation of the gas transmission network. This role exists to ensure terminal assets are maintained, operated, and improved to the highest standards, helping keep energy flowing when it's needed most.

You'll play an important part in protecting the integrity of critical infrastructure, supporting the introduction of new assets, responding to operational issues, and maintaining a strong culture of safety. The work is varied, practical, and directly connected to the performance of a nationally important energy network.

What you'll be doing
  • Carry out installation, inspection, commissioning, operational, and emergency response activities across terminal assets within your area of competence
  • Manage safe systems of work, including setting work safely for yourself and others, and implementing isolations in line with operational procedures
  • Prepare, review, and accept Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), and raise permits to work to ensure activities are carried out safely and in accordance with site procedures
  • Maintain accurate operational and maintenance records to support regulatory compliance and business assurance
  • Support the construction, testing, and commissioning of new assets connecting to the gas transmission network
  • Identify opportunities to replace, upgrade, or improve existing plant and equipment, providing technical input to minor modifications and projects
  • Oversee contractor and working party activities, ensuring technical standards, safety requirements, and procedures are consistently met
  • Work towards achieving and maintaining relevant company and site competencies and authorisations, including SCO/91, LV4 and EL96
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient operations
What you'll bring

This role would suit someone who enjoys hands-on engineering work, solving operational challenges, and contributing to the safe operation of critical energy infrastructure.

  • Proven operational and maintenance experience within electrical, instrumentation, or control systems engineering
  • Experience carrying out inspections on equipment installed in hazardous areas
  • Working knowledge of safe systems of work and experience operating within tightly controlled safety environments
  • Understanding of equipment and systems used across multiple engineering disciplines within the oil and gas, process, or comparable industrial sectors
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering legislation and industry standards within your technical discipline
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and a commitment to safe working practices
  • BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds NVQ/SVQ Level 3 City & Guilds qualification) or time-served apprenticeship in an electrical, instrumentation, or control systems engineering discipline
  • Full UK driving licence
  • CompEx EX01–EX04 certification for hazardous areas
  • City & Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing
  • City & Guilds 2377
  • BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • Experience working within a COMAH-regulated environment
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning, or modification projects within gas, oil, energy, or other process industries
