Job summary

Oshen in Plymouth is seeking a technically fluent project leader who owns customer programmes end to end. You will scope, plan, integrate sensors and payloads, manage schedules, budgets and risks, and act as the technical face of the company to defence customers, government scientists and offshore teams.

You will travel regularly across the UK and internationally, work with engineers in the workshop and on ships, run reviews and workshops, and help turn objectives into clear delivery plans while

Qualifications

• Two to five years is a useful guide rather than a hard gate.
• You have an engineering or STEM degree or equivalent practical experience.
• Project management experience is helpful (APM, PRINCE2 or Agile) or a track record of running technical projects.

Responsibilities

Job description

You own customer programmes end to end: scoping, planning, integration, delivery, and the relationship itself. You are the technical face of Oshen to defence customers, government scientists and offshore survey teams. You are credible in the meeting room because you understand the C-Star robots, and can communicate to engineers in the workshop because you understand them there too. You will travel to customer sites in the UK and internationally, and between programmes you will muck in with everything else at Oshen HQ.

What you might work on

• Turning a defence, science or offshore customer’s objective into a mission concept, technical scope, delivery plan and clear measures of success.
• Working with our engineers to integrate a new sensor or payload, then following it through bench tests, sea trials and deployment.
• Planning the practical details that make a programme happen: vessels, shipping, export licences, customer training, spares, data delivery and risk.
• Running customer reviews and technical workshops, and communicating clearly when the answer is uncertain or the plan has to change.
• Managing programme schedule, budget and dependencies well enough that everyone knows what is happening, without building process for its own sake.
• Spotting a programme risk before it becomes a crisis, then doing the unglamorous work needed to remove it.
• Capturing lessons from each deployment and improving the tools and processes that let a small team deliver larger programmes.

What Oshen is

We make the ocean’s eyes and ears. We tell people what is happening across the 70% of the globe covered by ocean. We do this with C-Star constellations, swarms of one-metre wind-and-solar robots that sail the open ocean. Ours is the only surface robot to sail into a Category 5 hurricane and come back with the data. We design and build them in Plymouth and deploy them for the US Government, the Royal Navy and climate scientists, giving information across an ocean the modern world depends on and currently cannot see.

If we succeed, navies will find dark ships and underwater threats before they reach critical infrastructure. Governments will predict hurricanes and other extreme weather earlier. Scientists will better understand how the ocean and climate are changing.

The people joining now will shape both the technology and the company. Very few engineers get to take something from an idea in the workshop to a real mission in the Atlantic, then use what it learns to make the next one better. Here, you can.

Who you are

• You might currently be a systems engineer, an integration and test engineer, a field engineer, an engineering consultant, a technical project manager, or simply the engineer who always ends up coordinating the difficult job because people trust you to finish it.
• Technically strong, likely with an engineering or other STEM degree, or equivalent practical experience. Two to five years is a useful guide rather than a hard gate. You do not live in your spreadsheets and hand the work to another engineer, you have the ability to crack on and do it yourself.
• Project management experience is helpful, whether formal training such as APM, PRINCE2 or Agile, or a track record of running technical projects without any of it. Familiarity with schedules, budgets, risk registers and stage reviews is useful, as long as you use them to help people rather than to generate paperwork.
• An excellent communicator. You explain the same problem clearly to a customer, an engineer, a supplier and company leadership, and you balance competing priorities without losing anyone.
• Organised. You build plans that help people, you set up processes that save the company time, and you can tell the difference between the two.
• High agency. When something threatens the programme, you see it early and fix it without being asked. You will put out five fires in a week and nobody will see you doing it.
• Calm when it goes wrong and able to adapt fast.
• Willing to travel regularly in the UK and internationally. Experience with defence or government contracts, export control, shipping and logistics, or working offshore is helpful but not required.

Compensation

• Equity: £25,000 – £90,000 of stock options at our most recent company valuation, depending on experience, implemented through an EMI options scheme.
