Project Controls Director – Large Projects Portfolio

This role will preferably be based at GSK HQ, UK but can be based at other European strategic locations on a case-by-case basis.

This is a truly exciting role where the Project Controls Director has accountability for ensuring large Priority Projects under the accountability of the Global Capital Projects function have the right capability, capacity and ways of working within the project controls discipline. These projects have the highest visibility within the GSK capital projects portfolio. This role will also work with the Identification and management of Project Controls Continuous Improvements (CI) and support the implementation through the Project Management Framework (PMF). They will further be responsible for guiding Independent Assurances on Large Projects within the SCRB Report.

This will be an individual contribution role being responsible for overseeing the project controls efforts on the priority projects to strengthen our positioning quickly. The Project Controls Director will have heavy influence on the way things are managed and set up in close collaboration with the Head of Project Controls & Risk.

This role will have daily contact to the VP of GCP due to the priority of the projects but will be a direct report to the Head of Project Controls & Risk. They will acts as deputy to the Head of Project Controls & Risk.

In this role you will:

  • Responsible for the implementation the GCP PMF Practices, Tools & Templates, and Ways of Working used for the effective estimation, benchmarking, risk management, contract administration, control and reporting of project time, cost, and progress.
  • Functional leadership of the Lead Project Controls Managers / Directors connected to the priority projects
  • Expert support and consultant to Project Controls team members throughout GCP and the key driver and advocate in standardisation of ways of working.
  • Perform Project Reviews, Independent Project Reviews (IPR’s) and health checks as needed to ensure effective project controls are in place from Business Analysis and providing early detection of issues or undesirable trends.
  • Ensure the robust application of Quantified Risk Analysis (QRA) in project cost and schedule using Monte Carlo Analysis Software simulation-based methodologies.
  • To benchmark and to establish relative value in GCP projects and performance.
  • To provide coaching for the extended network of staff similarly engaged across GCP.
  • Expert in the exploitation and improvement of our use of planning and controls systems, such as SAP, Oracle P6, Sypro, Monte Carlo simulation tools, visible reporting, earned value management, benchmarking and value assessment.
  • Maintain and engage with leading Project Control service providers globally to ensure we build on best practice and have access to effective partners.
  • To support the community of practice and training tools for the development of capability in Project Controls within GCP.

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Considerable experience in successfully delivering advanced planning and project controls capability on high visibility and prioritized projects across multiple geographies.
  • BSc/BEng in relevant discipline/Chartered Engineer.
  • Expert knowledge of comprehensive stage gate models for capital project delivery through all stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Expert knowledge and experience of Planning, Cost Management, Commercial management, Contract management and Project management
  • Expert knowledge in certain forms of contracts, their applications, and contract risks, and understanding on other forms of contracts.
  • Expert knowledge in Cost Management, Scope Management, Risk Management, Change Management and Forecasting
  • Strong senior stakeholder management and influencing capabilities
  • Rich experience in project management, project execution planning, construction management, scheduling and progress management, cost management and value engineering
  • Rich experience in leading risk reduction exploration, design management and outcome management

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:

  • MSc or PhD or other Chartered / Professional Qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Excellent management, communication and interpersonal skills, with comfort cooperating with individuals internally and externally at all organisational levels.
  • Understanding of how different functions interface on GSK projects.
  • Solid knowledge of GSK project process, User requirement management, quality and compliance requirement, site project completion and pre-start processes, and how these impact engineering and design, construction, commissioning, and qualification contracts
  • Familiar with the GCP Project Management Framework (PMF), relevant engineering standards and compliance requirement as well as Quality Management Systems
