Job description

We’re looking for experienced Project Chargehands to be part of the Highways Construction Services team undertaking planned highway, bridge and related construction and reconstruction projects, all based within our beautiful county of Derbyshire.

You will be working in a high-profile area of the business that is front and centre in terms of the Council’s Service Plan forming part of a motivated team who strive to achieve improved performance in service delivery embracing new technologies and best working practices.

You be responsible for the successful delivery of allocated schemes, working with and supervising teams to complete work within prescribed timescales to the required standard, providing value for money.

What will you be doing?

  • Supervising teams and subcontractors, allocating work, selecting the appropriate approach for the conditions, and ensuring specifications, budgetary constraints and quality standards are met.
  • You’ll be responsible for managing construction sites, and controlling and directing safe site operations, including devising and implementing safe systems of work and undertaking and reviewing risk assessments.
  • Using your ability to ensure good relationships with, and the safety of, the public, employees, clients, and contractors is essential, minimising disruption to travel as much as possible.
  • You’ll be part of a mandatory rota to deliver adverse weather and emergency services and winter maintenance (gritting and snow clearing), outside normal working hours, for which you’ll received additional payment.

We’d like to hear from you if you have:

  • A full driving licence LGV C, C+E, G
  • Experience in a supervisory role and the ability to manage, motivate, mentor and develop a team
  • Experience in Highways maintenance and construction services, including winter maintenance and adverse weather activities.
  • The full range of construction skills including drainage, road resurfacing, manhole construction, kerbing works, fencing, flag and block laying, structural concreting, and patching
  • Knowledge of the current highways and bridgeworks specifications, national contract conditions, and statutory regulations
