Financial Accountant

  • Location: Croydon
  • Job Type: Contract (6 months)
  • Salary: £475 per day

We are seeking a Financial Accountant for a 6-month contract position. This role reports into the Trust Accountant and is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial and management accounts for internal and external customers, and ensuring compliance with UK accounting standards and regulations. The successful candidate will be instrumental in maintaining robust financial controls, producing high-quality management and statutory accounts, and contributing to the continuous improvement of financial processes.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:

    • Prepare comprehensive monthly management accounts including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements with detailed variance analysis and commentary.
    • Support the production of statutory financial statements in compliance with UK GAAP and other relevant standards.
    • Conduct variance analysis against budget, forecast, and prior year, providing detailed explanations and insights.
    • Create and maintain standardized reporting templates to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Technical Accounting & Compliance:

    • Monitor and implement changes in accounting standards, ensuring compliance with UK GAAP.
    • Prepare detailed VAT returns and maintain VAT control account with monthly reconciliations.
    • Support with external and internal audit requests, preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Financial Control & Process Improvement:

    • Support month-end close process, including preparation and review of checklist completion.
    • Develop and maintain robust internal controls and procedures.
    • Conduct regular reviews of financial processes to identify efficiency improvements.
  • Team Leadership & Development:

    • Review work of management accountants and provide constructive feedback.
    • Help develop and maintain team procedures and best practices.
  • Audit:

    • Prepare and review audit files in line with the timetable.
    • Respond to daily audit requests from auditors.
  • Control Accounts and Reconciliations:

    • Establish and review all balance sheet control account reconciliations.
    • Manage the month-end reconciliation process ensuring timely completion.
  • Journal Entry Management:

    • Develop and maintain journal entry procedures and controls.
    • Review and approve manual journal entries ensuring appropriate documentation.
  • Expense Management:

    • Monitor expense trends and prepare analysis for management.
    • Review corporate credit card reconciliations and statements.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • ACA, ACCA, or CIMA (or equivalent) either in progress or recently obtained.
  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline with a strong academic record.
  • Ideally 2-3 years of post-graduation experience in an accounting role, preferably within a commercial environment.
  • Proficiency in financial systems and ERP software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Sage) along with advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with a keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
