About the Role

The University of Reading is seeking a new Head of Department of Computer Science at an exciting time in the Department's development. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to maintain current growth momentum and build on successful strategies in research and teaching excellence, leveraging the School's strength in environmental sciences to develop strategic partnerships that will reshape our programme portfolio and enhance the student experience.

The appointment as Head of Department will be for an initial term of 5 years, with a permanent position as Professor of Computer Science.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a clear vision for the Department's success in a competitive environment, with leadership skills to work collaboratively with staff to realize this vision. The ability to manage priorities and communicate effectively with colleagues holding diverse perspectives is essential.

The Department has strong research activities in Advanced Computing for Environmental Sciences, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence, with collaborations with the Met Office, ECMWF, and high-performance computing providers. Our teaching includes BSc and MSc programmes in relevant fields. The Department plans to expand with several academic positions from 2025 to 2027, and the new Head will play a key role in shaping and recruiting for these roles.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence applied to Environmental Science, Health, Security, and Digital Humanities.
