Job summary

Queen’s University Belfast's School of Nursing & Midwifery invites applications for a Professor in Nursing. The postholder will lead, support and initiate collaborative research across the School and Faculty, contributing to teaching and capacity-building projects.

They will foster national and international links with health and social care services and service users and families, and will provide leadership in research strategy and postgraduate supervision.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., nursing, midwifery, medicine, public health).
• Current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (specialist area), OR eligible for such registration.
• Experience leading national or international grants as Principal Investigator.
• Sustained record of publications in peer reviewed journals with international impact.
• Strong international collaborations and leadership in interdisciplinary teams.
• Evidence of supervising postgraduate students.

Job description

The School of Nursing & Midwifery at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to recruit a Professor in Nursing.

The successful candidate at Professorial level will have expertise in health and social care to lead, support, and initiate collaborative research on a variety of projects. The postholder will bring research, teaching and learning expertise and will be expected to contribute to multiple research and capacity strengthening projects across the School / Faculty and further building on national and international collaborative links with health and social care services and service users and/or their families and carers.

Established in 1991, the Queens School of Nursing & Midwifery is a leading centre for nursing and midwifery research and education nationally and internationally. Within the School we have three innovative research themes (Maternal and Child Health; Chronic Illness and Palliative Care; and Education and Practice), which encapsulate lifespan health research from conception to end-of-life.

The School provides a range of innovative programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level, which prepare nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals for leadership roles in clinical care, teaching, management and research. With approximately 3,500 students, the School has one of the most extensive portfolios of programmes of any nursing and midwifery school in the UK or Ireland.

About the person:

The successful candidate at Professorial level must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

• PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline. (e.g. nursing, midwifery, medicine, pharmacy, public health, health services research, or a related field).
• Current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (specialist area), OR eligible for such registration.
• Experience in: Chronic Ill Health, Mental Health, Older People or Dementia Care research. Sustained record of publications in peer reviewed journals that are impactful in practice and REF returnable at an international level of excellence.
• Extensive and sustained record of leading successful bids for competitive, peer-reviewed national or international grants or other awards with significant external peer reviewed research funding related to own area of health and social care expertise as a Principal Investigator over a sustained period.
• Recognised international expert in health and social care as evidenced by a track record of, for example, invited presentations at national and international conferences, events, invited keynote and plenary lectures at conferences. Strong research collaborations outside current institution and experience in leading or making significant contribution to interdisciplinary teams.
• Research profile that complements the research priorities of the School and contributes to the School’s international profile.
• Successful, sustained student supervision as primary supervisor normally at postgraduate/PhD level.
• Experience of teaching students and in the supervision of students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Substantial experience of providing support and guidance to students.
• Evidence of making a positive contribution to the development of teaching.
• Experience of management in the research context and administration of teaching and research in a university setting. Contribution to leadership and administrative activities at a strategic level.
• Extensive experience of mentoring/training/management of colleagues.
• Design and impactful delivery of a wider range of programmes or initiatives which support organisational priorities e.g. relating to EDI, widening participation, internationalisation, community outreach.
