Job description

Research and Position Overview

Your research at our Law School and University will contribute to strategically important objectives as part of the (CSDLP), an internationally leading initiative called JusTN0W ('Just Transitions to a Net Zero World'). Founded in 2022, the CSDLP operates as a research centre at the University level with around 50 members from diverse disciplines.

Professors / Associate Professors at Durham

This position offers an opportunity to focus on research and grant income generation. All Professors and Associate Professors are encouraged to prioritize quality and innovation in research and education. You will also be expected to demonstrate leadership and citizenship across the University environment and within your department.

Academic colleagues are expected to pursue research that is world-leading and impactful, characterized by originality, significance, and rigour, while delivering research-led teaching. We support your ambitions to publish internationally significant research and provide resources for conference attendance and research funding.

Role Specifics

Initially, teaching responsibilities will be significantly reduced for the first four years (potentially longer depending on external funding success) to allow for increased focus on grant acquisition and research activities. Applicants should have demonstrable experience in securing external funding, project management, and successful bid writing. A well-established international network is essential for developing impact pathways. It is crucial for the success of JusTN0W that the team grows and collaborates effectively to meet project objectives.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in international law with an interest in sustainability, climate change, and the transition to net zero. The ability to lead the development of JusTN0W and Durham's academic community is essential. Experience with or capacity to undertake REF Impact case studies is required.

Selection Process

Short-listed candidates will be invited to meet key department members, either virtually or in person. The assessment will typically include a presentation to staff and students, followed by an interview. These are scheduled to take place over two days in July 2025, with a preferred start date in autumn 2025. If unable to attend in person, alternative arrangements may not be possible.
