Job summary

Shell is seeking a Products Freight Analyst to drive data-driven insights for commercial decisions in the Global Products Freight desk. You will build analytical tools, partner with traders, BD, finance, and wider stakeholders to deliver tradeable insights and improved performance.

The role offers visibility and impact, with opportunities to shape data usage, automation, and forecasting across vessel classes and trading books. Strong technical and commercial acumen is essential.

Qualifications

• Strong analytical capability with proven experience in freight, shipping, commodities, or maritime analytics.
• Advanced Excel (including VBA) required; Python or similar coding proficiency strongly preferred.
• Ability to automate datasets, build structured models, and translate data into meaningful insights.
• Solid understanding of maritime market fundamentals (vessel classes, flows, congestion, asset valuation, etc.).
• Experience with external freight analytics tools (Signal Ocean, Vortexa) beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Market Analytics & Modelling: develop and own advanced analysis of supply/demand, vessel trends, and regional flows.
• Convert data from multiple sources into actionable trade insights and build analytical models with Python/VBA.
• Produce and present weekly freight market analysis, including fixtures, tonnage, bunker trends, and activity.
• Lead MI dashboards, maintain exposure sheets, benchmarking, and vessel/route analytics.
• Collaborate with traders, Business Development, and analytics teams to align on economics and projections.
• P&L analytics: maintain processes for freight P&L reporting and variance analysis.

This position is designed for an experienced analyst who can independently deliver high-quality tradeable market insights, develop analytical tools, and partner closely with traders, business development, finance, and wider Trading & Supply stakeholders.

This role offers excellent visibility, commercial impact, and the opportunity to shape how the Products Freight desk uses data and analytics to drive performance.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Market Analytics & Modelling
• Develop and own advanced short-term and long‑term analysis of Products Freight supply/demand, including vessel newbuild, scrappage trends, regional flows, congestion, and seasonal patterns.
• Convert data from multiple internal and external sources into actionable trade insights.
• Build and enhance analytical models using Python and/or advanced Excel (VBA) to support:
  • Forward curve proxies
  • Stress‑testing of freight exposure
  • Regression and correlation analysis across vessel classes
  • Macro and micro market fundamentals
• Produce and present weekly freight market analysis, including fixtures, tonnage lists, bunker trends, emissions metrics, and competitor activity.
• Collaborate with Products trading and oil analytics teams to integrate refinery economics, arbitrage indicators, and product flow projections.
• Management Information (MI), Reporting & Automation
• Lead the development and continuous improvement of MI dashboards, ensuring accuracy, automation, and clear storytelling.
• Maintain and enhance exposure sheets, outperformance benchmarking, and vessel/route analytics.
• Integrate third‑party maritime, flows, and asset data into structured databases to enable automation and new modelling capabilities.
• Deliver high‑quality presentations, book reviews, and insights for routine commercial meetings.
• Act as a path-finder in the team for new technology solutions to data problems
• Commercial & Cross‑Functional Partnership
• Work closely with freight traders to provide timely analysis during market events, fixture opportunities, and product trading flows.
• Partner with Business Development to evaluate opportunities such as COA structures, time‑charter strategies, triangulation performance, and new product‑freight corridors.
• Engage with brokers, shipowners, and analysts to collect market intelligence and benchmark performance.
• P&L Analytics
• Maintain and enhance processes for Products Freight P&L reporting and variance analysis.
• Build and operate models that explain drivers of earnings across vessels, regions, and trading books.
• Ensure all systems of record remain updated, accurate, and aligned with trading activity.

What You Bring

We are keen to hear from candidates with relevant experience in shipping, freight, energy analytics or trading support and have demonstrated the ability to lead analytical work rather than only supporting it. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of independently designing, enhancing, and implementing analytical methodologies, coupled with a strong sense of accountability, ownership, and commercial acumen. They should also possess a growth mindset and a genuine desire to continuously deepen their technical expertise and understanding of market dynamics.
